Mangaluru, Dec 8: In a shocking incident, a police official was allegedly slapped during the protest organized by VHP, Bajrang Dal and other like-minded outfits at Vamanjoor here on Monday December 8.
The protest was organized as part of the bandh called by VHP and Bajrang Dal against the attack on Datta Peetha pilgrims on the night of December 5.
Though the protest was initially peaceful, it soon turned chaotic after some of the protestors insisted on entering Ulaibettu where Section 144 was imposed. There was stone-pelting too, which the protestors claimed was done by the locals.
To control the mob, the police resorted to lathi charge. In the ensuing struggle between the police and the protestors, there was a lot of pushing and shoving, and consequently four policemen were injured.
Some of the eyewitnesses said that when one of the police personnel was about to arrest a main protestor, another leader of the group of protestors intervened, and in a fit of rage, allegedly slapped the police official.
The person reportedly apologized to the police official for his behaviour and the matter was settled then and there, sources said, probably to avoid further trouble.
However, when contacted, the police denied the incident and said that no one had slapped any police official.
