Panaji, Dec 7 (PTI): The Goa government's demand for a Rs 1,000 crore financial package would be taken up after the ongoing Parliament session, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Saturday.
Parrikar, who had mooted the proposal during his tenure as the Goa Chief Minister, said another letter seeking the package was submitted by the current state CM Laxmikant Parsekar.
"Goa has submitted the formal proposal to the Union Government. Now it will be discussed with the Finance and Expenditure Secretary before it is put up before the Prime Minister," Parrikar, who was here to review a bridge project on Zuari river, told reporters. Parrikar said there is a delay in approving the proposal due to the ongoing Parliamentary session and also in view of the visits of VVIPs lined up this month.
He said although the demand is made for a Rs 1,000 crore package, it is up to the Centre to decide the actual amount to be sanctioned. Earlier last month, Parrikar had said that the Centre has agreed in-principle to provide the financial package to Goa government to compensate revenue losses caused due to closure of the mining industry, following the ban by the Laxmikant Parsekar in 2012.
The Supreme Court had banned mining exports from Goa in 2012 after allegations of large-scale illegal mining. However, in April this year, the apex court lifted the ban on extraction of iron ore in the state.
