Mangaluru: Communal unrest - Protestors give deadline, locals allege police brutality

Mangaluru: Argument over road sparked Ulaibettu clash - Police commissioner

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (CLP)

Updated

Mangaluru, Dec 6: Argument over a new road ignited the communal clash that occured at Ulaibettu on the night of Friday December 5, police commissioner R Hitendra has said.

Speaking to daijiworld, the police commissioner said that the bus carrying Datta Peetha pilgrims was about to go through a newly-laid road that was yet to be inaugurated at Ulaibettu. Barricades had been put up and locals who saw the bus passing by, tried to stop it, saying that the road was not yet opened for public. However, the bus did not stop, which prompted the locals to pelt stones at the bus, said the commissioner. After a brief altercation, the bus with the pilgrims went on its way.

The issue snowballed into a clash between two groups, and took on communal colour and stones were pelted at the mosque. The commissioner however did not mention the communities involved. In the ensuing fight, women who tried to intervene and calm down the mob were also assaulted, he said.

Sources said that 10 men and two ladies have been admitted to hospital.

Altogether, four cases have been registered so far - one by a woman who was assaulted, another by the mosque, another by Datta Peetha pilgrims, and by a Hindu outift.

As many as 23 persons have been arrested in the case, but no new arrests were made on Saturday December 6, Hitendra said.

About allegations by Ulaibettu residents that police had used brutal force and damaged property, the commissioner said that on Friday night when the police were investigating the incident, the residents were asked to come out of their houses, but they refused to cooperate. Hence, police had to forcibly open doors and conduct searches, but they did not break any property, he said.

He further added that the situation is now under control, and once the Datta Peetha pilgrims return, further investigations will be be done.

Updated

Mangaluru, Dec 6: Following the communal disturbances that erupted at Ulaibettu after members of a community pelted stones and attacked Datta Peetha pilgrims on the night of Friday December 5, a protest was held at Vamanjoor to condemn the incident.

Addressing the protest, Sri Rajashekarananda Swamiji of Gurpur Vajradehi Math said, "This is a Taliban-like act. It happens in other country, but now it is happening in our place. In the name of minority they are attacking the majority Hindus. We have not worn bangles. This is shameless act which is totally unacceptable. They attacked us when we were not armed, if they have guts let them come and attack us now."

Alleging that the police did not come to the rescue of the pilgrims, he said, "When a mother called the police for protection, a policeman told her that even they were scared. No police will come to our help, so let us defend and protect ourselves. If this had been done by Hindus, the police would have arrested and booked us under the Goonda Act by now."

He further said, "Muslims are regularly indulging in cow slaughter, Love Jihad and conversion but the police are not taking any action. When we approached the police commissioner he said he would visit the spot - is he going there for lunch? Being a Swami, I am joining this protest, as I could not not bear to see Datta Peetha pilgrims being attacked. I cannot keep quiet. I visited the injured in the hospital. This was a well planned attack, as they came with rods and swords."

He also said that on Monday December 8, bandh will be observed in Gurpur.

When ACP Pawan Nejjoor came to the spot along with his team, arguments arose between the police and the protestors who demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. The ACP promised to take action by Sunday December 7 evening, for which the protestors warned that if the police fail to meet the deadline, a bandh would be observed on Monday.

Jitendra Kottary of Hindu Yuva Sene briefed about the attack and said, "Nearly 500 people attacked the pilgrims without provocation. All of them must be arrested and booked under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder). We will intensify our protest on Monday if no action is taken by police.

"The 'kesari' (saffron) stands for lion. Do not try to disturb the lion, or we will attack back. Do not play with our emotions," he warned.

Satyajit Suratkal of Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) called for the resignation of local MLAs Mohiuddin Bava and J R Lobo, and said, "People came in hundreds to attack us, and police did not help us even when we appealed. Where is the government? The CM was talking about controlling moral policing, but here immoral policing is happening. Where is the CM now and where is minister Ramanath Rai? The Congress is anti-Hindu."

Referring to the communal tension that gripped Gangolli in Kundapur, he said, "Hanif was not attacked by Hindus. It was just a clash but they gave communal colour to it. Attacking innocent Hindus is just not acceptable.

"On Monday we will wear saffron and descend on this same street carrying saffron flags. If you (pilgrim attackers) have guts, then try to stop us then," he challenged.

Dr Bharat of state BJP Yuva Morcha, Rajesh Kottary and others were present.

The protestors blocked traffic for over one hour, by holding dharna on the street and shouted slogans against the governement.

28 arrested, locals allege police brutality

Meanwhile, an uneasy calm gripped Ulaibettu where the incident occured on Friday night. Police commissioner R Hitendra informed reporters that already 28 persons have been arrested in the case and more would be taken into custody soon.

The residents in Ulaibettu, mostly Muslims, alleged that police teams barged into their houses at night and destroyed their property like television sets and windows. They claimed that activists of right wing outfits also accompanied the police. A woman said that her son who had just arrived from Dubai and was sleeping was forcibly taken away. Doors of some of the houses in the area bore footprints indicating that they might have been kicked open, and some of the doors were broken.

Mangaluru: Communal tensions flare up at Ulaibettu

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 6: Communal tensions flared up at Ulaibettu near here on the night of Friday December 5.

Tensions started to build after members of a community allegedly attacked a bus carrying pilgrims bound for Datta Peetha in Chikmagalur district

In retaliation, the pilgrims allegedly pelted stones at a mosque in Vamanjoor in the outskirts of the city.

In the stone pelting incident, a car and a petty shop were damaged. When local Muslim youth came together to rebut the attackers, they took their heels.

The police immediately visited the spot and ensured that the incidents did not spread to other areas by taking control of the situation. After the police deployment, no unsavoury incidents were reported.

Two auto rickshaws and two bikes came under attack with stones. Three persons got admitted into SCS Hospital here with injuries.

In connection with the incident, both Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal have given call for Dakshina Kannada district bandh on Monday December 8. A protest is also likely to be held on December 6.

    Dear Daijiworld Readers,

My humble request to all is to spare some time & pls visit the victims of ulaibettu riot. Listen to their vain!
    1. There has been no pelting of stones on mosque.
    2. There has been no attack on pilgrims, these victims are normal daily wage workers who were returning home after their work in town.
    3. The road matter as stated by hon' commissioner is untrue. There was no real cause that sprouted this attack on poor people.
    4. The brutality of attack was so severe that one has lost 4 left hand fingers, one has suffered upper jaw dislocation he cant eat, swallow any solid food for six months and one got right leg (knee) fractured. May Lord give strength for them and their family to recover from this severe trial and shock.Gods grace nobody lost their life.

Surprisingly, this is what the Police Commissioner said to justify the forcible raid: "on Friday night when the police were investigating the incident, the residents were asked to come out of their houses, but they refused to cooperate"

So the commissioner is basically telling us that residents "did not cooperate" by not coming out of their houses at midnight when there's trouble in town? What else does he expect them to do? I have heard of people booked for stopping policemen, but this is the first time I hear the police justifying saying the residents didn't cooperate merely because they refused to come out of their houses! Wonder if the residents belonged to the majority community, his force would have dared to do the same

What were right wing organisations doing accompanying the police on raids? Why didn't the police use similar actions against houses where the majority resides, when there was stone throwing at the mosque as well. This seems to be a regular pattern - of the police turning a blind eye to atrocities from right wing majoritarian organisations while treating the minority community as second class citizens

Social evils are evils, they don't belong to any community.
I don't see any reason, why majority community feel vulnerable, Hinduism is a sanathan dharma it can withstand any attack and it will live eternally forever. In my opinion the swamiji's must invoke the power of almighty not by relying on the human muscle power and make threatening/ challenging statement by coming to the streets in front of social evils.
Of recently by looking at the instances across our “MAHAN BHARAT”, I feel now a days the real Hindu values are getting degenerated very fast. There is no need for hindus to embrace terrorism to protect their own religion.
The least what i can say here is that -
One can protect Hindu religion by aggression but a Hindu religion without the centuries old ethos & values can't be called as highly valued/embraced/practiced Hindu religion of Ancient history.

India, oh sorry, Bharath, oh sorry again, Hindustan has never been in the forefront of anything.

The tragedy (now pay attention) is that just around 4% of the Hindu upper castes control 77% of the rest of the Hindu populace. CONTROL. That’s the keyword. Classic case of a minority dictating to the majority! Lower castes (read Shudras) have always been used by the upper castes to get the menial works done to the satisfaction of the the “mighty” (those who do not agree should, with boldness, read the country’s history).

Shri Narendra Modiji is a wonderful exception who broke the shackles to rise to handle the topmost position in our country. My salutations to the true leader. His ambitions and conduct as a person from the “lower strata” of the Hindu social order is highly commendable and exemplary.

Our country will rise to the top when caste control is no more an issue.

Totally one sided report...not even mentioned how muslims were manhandled and houses were barged in...
Issue started when pilgrims claimed their bus was allegedly stoned....Then stoning happened to local masjid by the sanghi goons and scuffle occurred btw two communities....
First police must identify whether stoning really took place on bus....coz it is any easy argument to start any riots....This allegation should be proved...If stoning happened how come they retaliate to localmasjid...without knowing the culprits and their community...This are not work of any religious people.......stoning can be act of insiders to start riot then blame it on other community and attack their place of worship to start riots....

It’s the Government which is inefficient in preventing these kinds of incidents. Where there is will there is way! If Government wants to bring peace they can do it by banning all gathering where youths are brain washed. The Government needs to take severe action against the people whoever they are whichever community, region, background they belong, no one should be spared. Their speeches must be recorded and if proved provocation, to be arrested immediately and must not release them whatever pressure they get by means of protests and bands.
These leaders succeeded not only brainwashing the uneducated, unemployed goons but also educated people (you may find some in this forum too). Most of the comments are justifying the acts of the leader’s of their own community rather making comments on win-win situation.

Disturbing news. Our South Kanara is no longer a safe district. Now we have very deep division in the society. Yesterday in Gangolli HJV leaders asked hindus to stop doing any kind of business with muslims. I am sure most muslims also will do the same thing and stop going to hindu shops, thus widening the division further.
Blaming each other will not solve this crisis.
I feel it is better to leave South Kanara permanently and settle down in some peaceful place.
Real estate developers of Mangalore will have to worry about their future.

This is typical of India. Hindus are told by some of their own, that there is a major threat to their culture. Terrorism, conversion and minority empowerment are the painted in such a way, that any normal Hindu feel, he/she is threatened.

On the other hand, when the minority community realises that the majority community organizing themselves, they start to organize themselves.

Both, want to give fitting reply to each other, in case situation created.

A small incidents once all people used to laugh their lungs out could be these days a potential
    danger.

BJP feels majority hindu votes will come into their favor and Congress feels consolidated minority votes, along with some peace loving hindu votes will come in its favor. There are other smaller parties like JD(S), who also got their own calculations. Each put forward a candidate who can consolidate the votes in their favor, through oratory, myth or muscle power.

This is such a contrast. Politicians are the most hated in India, and all the Indians together want to make one of those useless political win in the election.

End result is always the same, there will be poor people from all walks of life, loosing their life, livelihood, property and faith in political system. This is dangerous for a country of the size and diversity within India.

It is painful to see people fighting each other in the name of religion. This "Mine is bigger/ better than yours" attitude is causing so much of a problem to common people.

Time and energy are better spent in working towards the overall progress of the society rather than squabbling over a power called God.

When God is omnipresent and omnipotent, does that ultimate power really need mere humans like us to "defend" it's various forms? Point to ponder, isn't it?

Remember reading somewhere "God's biggest mistake was creating humans.... Humans immediately created a million Gods".....

Even on this forum, most of the times, people tend to blindly defend "their people", without even an iota of rational thinking.

Please wake up and see the truth... Finally we all end up as Organic matter, irrespective of our religion.... When there is a need for blood transfusion, do we try to verify the community of the donor?

Each of us can make a positive difference by freeing ourselves from all prejudices.

When we stare death in it's face, all these petty issues seem insignificant.... been there, dont that.... Hoping for a better world.....

It is the duty and responsibility of police personals to act strictly on the ground level as per the oath they took when joining the department. We need to blame Security personals not the ruling Govt, where it is Cong or BJP or JDS. We need to look other Democratic countries how they act.
