Mangaluru: Rare tumour removed from 3-year-old's heart at AJ Hospital

Media Release

Mangaluru, Dec 5: The paediatric cardiac surgery team at AJ Hospital & Research Centre successfully removed a large rare tumor from the heart of a 3-year-old.

Shakila, a 3-year-old from Puttur was presented with exertional breathlessness. She was evaluated by Dr Prem Alva, consultant interventional paediatric cardiologist and diagnosed to have a tumour in the heart.

She was operated by the paediatric cardiac surgery team. Dr Gourav Shetty, consultant congenital and paediatric cardiac surgeon said the tumour was filling the right ventricle and blocking the outflow of blood to the lungs.

This is a rare cardiac tumour, which forms 5% of all cardiac tumours.

The child has recovered completely and is discharged from the hospital.
