Mangaluru, Dec 4: BJP Mahila Morcha on Thursday December 4 organized a protest rally and 'Jail Bharo' against the state government over rampant increase in sexual assaults on women and children, and demanded the resignation of home minister K J George for 'failing to ensure protection to women and children'.
The protest rally commenced from the taluk panchayat office and culminated at A B Shetty Circle.
Addressing the protest, Sulochana G K Bhat, state vice-president of Mahila Morcha said "The state government has failed to provide proper administration in the state. Sexual assault are women and children are increasing, and the government has failed to ensure protection to life and modesty of women. Government should frame laws to curb sexual offences and punish the culprits."
She also said that government should immediately form fast track courts and rehabilitation centres and counselling centers for rape victims and their parents, and that they should be proper compensated.
Commenting on the alleged interference of government in police affairs, she said, "The police are efficient in doing their work, give them a free hand."
Pulasya Rai, state Mahila Morcha secretary said "Though the assaults on women have increased, the state government is showing negligence. The chief minister and the home minister are giving baseless statements."
Commenting on Teerthahalli Nandita death case, she alleged that the state government is protecting the accused.
BJP former MLA Mallika Prasad Bhandary said, "Law and order in the state has completely deteriorated after the Congress government came to power. Cases of sexual assaults on women are repeating, but the government has failed to provide protection to women and children. State home minister K J George should resign for misgovernance."
District BJP president Prathap Simha Nayak also spoke on this occasion.
Mahila Morcha members also formed a human chain, which disrupted the vehicular movement at AB Shetty Circle. Police intervened and took them away.
Sharin Subbayya, Kodagu zilla panchayat president Kanthi Belliyappa also spoke on this occasion.
