Udupi, Nov 27: With an aim to discourage the practice of the controversial ritual of 'Made Snana', more than ten devotees observed Yede Snana at Subramanya Temple at Muchilakodu Kukkikatte here Thursday November 27.

'Yede Snana' is being performed at the Subramanya Temple instead of 'Made Snana' since last year. Here, instead of rolling on the leftovers, the devotees roll on the 'prasadam' offered to the deity.

Sri Vishweshathirtha Swamiji of Pejawar who has been strongly supporting the idea of replacing 'Made Snana' with 'Yede Snana', said, "'Yede Snana' is an alternative to the 'Made Snana'. 'Yede Snana' will satisfy both the devotees as well as progressive Math priests."

The Swamiji also assured that in the forthcoming paryaya (when it comes to Pejawar Math), Yede Snana would be performed in Sri Krishna Math, instead of Made Snana.

Saroja from Moodubelle who visited the temple to perform the Yede Sana, speaking to daijiworld, said "My daughter has not conceived from several years, but after I prayed with devotion and pledged to perform Yede Snana, she became pregnant."

Sudha, a devotee said, "I came to perform Made Snana with devotion voluntarily and not out of pressure from anyone."

Is these snana’s (Made / Yede) are written in Hindu scripts or blindly following the pandits, tomorrow they may tell something else as per their wish and people are following. I have seen many pandits performing different kind of poojas and making good income, constructing big houses etc. but the poor person who comes for pooja are still poor no solution, but some pandits are making good money.

Prasadam is for eating not rolling over. Rolling over leftovers is ok before removal of leaves anyway.

I think Yede snahna sounds much better than Made Snahna. With Made Snahna we used to treat Brahmins as ultimate gods. Atleast with yede snahna, devotees have the feeling that, they are rolling over the prasadam issued by the god.
Mrs Saroja, you need god's blessings too and along with that, you need to show your daughter to good Gynecologist.

Nobody wants that dalith/lower caste people to roll over leftovers by brahmins nor forces them to do so.Arguement that brahmins to roll over the leftovers of other castes is like introducing a new ritual. Here issue is abolision of evil things by persuation and not by banning it legally or by introduction new system.Bettale seve by lower caste is banned as it is a extreme system connected to womens chastity. There are lot of religious beliefs which people are practicing since centuries voluntarily.in DK kola performer eats raw chicken and dring the blood. This is a ritual since centuries. Can thsi be banned by law?In Udupi Srikrishna mutt devotees used to take meals on pain floor of dining hall as a ritual voluntarily. No discussion about that.It may hurt the religious sentiments. In christians the Bishop will touch/wash the feet of 12 civilians/devotees on the previous day of good friday. That is their religious fauth and belief. Some may find it unhygene. In muslims too similar systems prevail which others see it as unhygene. In our soceity now a days a section of reformers advocating temple poojas by widows and wish more and more widows be gathered in their such function to show organisers capability of reforming. On the otherhand they seldom go the reasons why they became widows in early ages.Introducing poojas by them does not amount reform.Instead let them ban liquor use which is a major cause of disaster for such widows.Such widow priests are not being used in religious services like their childrens marriages/performing bhoomi poojas of mega apartments/flats in the city or in any other auspicious occasions. Is it not a humilation ?These are endless arguments instead let us educate/lead strong campaign against evil practices in every religion instead of harping on 'mood nambike' of only Hindu religion.
The newly invented 'yede snana' is nothing but wasting/ill treating the naivedya prasadams which many will not agree.

Do we need to support made snana just because it is followed for many centuries? Is it really faith of the people or still continuation of caste system by using their ignorance? Just as we cant support slavery because it was practiced for centuries in the same way this superstitious practice has to be eliminated through creating awareness among people

With due & full respect to Swamiji, I would wish to say that Madesnana is performed since centuries, only in Subrahmanya Temple, only on some days say, Srasti, Panchami or so. Its the devotees faith & belief that makes him to do so, & no one forces or insist them to do so. The more we deviate the subject, strong opposition will develop, & the recent Hon.High Court Judgement makes it clear. Best is we leave it to devotees belief & faith than rather we dictate them.

With highest respects to Sree Pejavar mutt swamiji,I wish to submit that 'Yede snana' is not the answer for made snana which in vogue since centuries and being performed by the devotees with utmost devotion to the presenting diety Lord Subramanya.Lot of discussions were held from time to time in recent times on made snana which is pure a faith/belief of devotees.More importantly it is only a voluntary act/service.Introducing counter ritual to made snana may open new arguements from hygene point.Best thing is proper education and guidence and not by legal methods.Recent HC judement in favour of made snana is an eye opener for all those critics of madesnana.
I take the liberty to draw the attention of respectd swamiji that in Udupi Sree Krishna mutt there is a practice of taking lunch on the floor of the dining place without plantain leaves pr pathravali.Anybody has thought of abolishing this ritual also on the pretext of hypgeneness? It is upto reformers to have a say on this ritual.

If you want MADE SNANA to continue let it be over food eaten by all caste people not just food eaten by Brahmins only... Let this caste discrimination end... I think this is the only way to discontinue this practice... We have already discontinued many inhuman practices like BETTALE SEVE, SATI etc.. why not this...??

To resolve madesnana, as per you is only by daliths and advocating made snana by brahmins on leftovers of daliths,do you propose introducing bettale seve also a extreme evil ritual by brahmins too?
In Mangalore and every where most of the non gbrahmin marriages amongst Hindus are solemnised by brahmins, why so? Why reformists not thought of doing it by daliths or widows?

It is absurd to support a tradition just because the said ritual is continuing for long time. I proposed to remove the caste discrimination from this ritual so that the evil practice itself gets natural death. The proponents of this ritual itself will come out and stop it. We Hindu's should be concerned with the bad belief in our religion and try to reform them first before concentrating on defects in other religions.. Pl understand that there were many customs and traditions which were there in our society for long time got discontinued by the efforts of social reformers. I am witness to a time where Dalits used to be inhumanly served tea in separate glass's in hotels, that to in coconut shells which got changed for good... So don't expect every custom or tradition to continue without scrutiny..everything has to change with time.
