Bengaluru: At LGBTQ event, queers get bold, unmask themselves

This year, the Bengaluru Pride March and Karnataka Queer Habba were different. For, a majority of sexual minority community members chose to boldly reveal their identity by not covering their faces as in the past.

Nearly 2,000 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) activists, supporters and other sexual minorities marched on the City’s streets seeking an end to violence and oppression based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

The scorching sun did not deter them from marching from the City railway station till Chandrashekhar Azad grounds, Malleswaram, on Sunday afternoon.

The activists raised slogans and placards inked with such messages as ‘My Body, My Right’, ‘My Sexuality, My Right’ among others, leaving many onlookers curious, some of whom enquired about the event and its objectives. The participants greeted each other with red roses, released colourful balloons in the air and shook a leg or two.

They distributed pamphlets on IPC Section 377 (which criminalises gay sex) and demands of sexual minority community, etc.

Supporters from all over

Apart from Bengaluru, the participants had come from different parts of Karnataka as well as Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai.

One of them, Harish Iyer, who was accompanied by his mother, said, “Section 377 of the IPC and section 36 (A) of the Karnataka Police Act should be repealed. The Supreme Court judgment on transgender rights should be enforced without delay.”

Section 36(A) empowers the police commissioner to pass orders to maintain a register on the names and places of all transgenders, who are reasonably suspected of kidnapping or emasculating boys, committing unnatural offences, or any other offences.

Sandeep M, another participant, said that being part of the rally was liberating.

“The Indian society is against us which is unfortunate. Every individual has the right to be free and be with whomever he/she likes irrespective of the sex.”

An activist of the Campaign for Sexual Minorities and Sex Workers’ Rights (CSMR), which organised the event, claimed that the number of participants was going up every year.

“The next three weeks will have pride-related events such as flash mobs, ‘Queer My Mudra’, screening of queer-themed short films, musical performances, poetry-reading sessions and the diversity melas. These events will be held in different parts of Bengaluru,” said Archana Shetty of Campaign for Sexual Minorities and Sex Workers’ Rights.

Like I said, as mutually consenting adults they are free to chose their lifestyle. It is better they come out now, rather than be closeted, and then get married because of societal pressures, and continue to be secretly gay (which they cannot avoid) no matter how lovely and caring their spouse might be. I knew of someone who committed suicide just after marriage because he was forced to get married by his parents. Even in the bible it says gays are condemned to burn in hell, but hey, who am I to judge? To each his own....

in alll mythological literature I have read as "Sura, nara, kinnara, Kimpurushaadi..."!! so this community was there from those days! however, it is real minority... live and let live them! its harsh to treat them badly... :) atleast Hindu mythology has many LGBT themes! its time to come off age and accept the reality... Yes, if one is perverse and ill treats others (paedophilia, rape) then he/she need to be dealt seriously!

Every adult has rights and can make choices, as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. Who are we to judge and cast aspersions? Btw, 8-10% of the world population is gay. Live and let live that's all.

LGBT community has of course the right to live as they want, but this behavior can not be termed as 'natural'. So we can just decriminalise it but should not legalise.

With all these kiss rallies and LGBT rallies getting massive support, days are not far when we hear about a rally of pedophiles asking for their rights.

Another big loop-hole in the thinking - "just decriminalise it but should not legalise".

Aren't there enough loop-holes for citizens to reel under such confusion confounded laws!

When it is not legal, our police will have enough room to criminalize the less fortunate.

What is normal for me & you is quite a different thing for a few. Who are we to judge and dictate one's liking and behavior as long as it does not disturb the society?

Humans are but one among the animal species. I wonder if such beings are in animal kingdom, a worthwhile study, then we can surely claim, that it is 'nature made them thus'.

There is also another thought. Due to varied experiences in life or due to aversion to family responsibilities, have some of us developed a mindset, which we feel is 'sexual minority'?

They definitely need to be accepted and not differently treated, but it will be good to understand how suddenly there is a boom in this category of people. Celebrities, film stars, successful people all claiming to belong to 'sexual minority', also tells me that, they are fulfilling certain needs and have no time to shoulder the family kind of responsibility, so leave them as such to ENJOY and BE INDEPENDENT.

Not a healthy lasting thing may be.

But yes, why they FEEL/BEHAVE thus, is to be addressed, if at all it is man-made situation, but they need not be treated differently, why are they different?

No doubt they have the freedom, its their body, their right. At the end of the day, is it the law of nature? Is it how the Lord created us to be? Would the world grow or reproduce if the LGBT community spreads? This is just lust, no family can be started nor would the relationship last. If the moral & biological grounds are wrong as in this case, then this is aGAYnst the law of nature & against the will of God. Counselling & support is required to change this state of mind

Sir, you don't have to worry about the extinction of human beings. Homosexuality has been there since human beings evolved. Heterosexuals have been busy with production.
