Mangalore, Nov 8: The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Mangalore University has planned to organise a job mela for degree students, either in January or February 2007. This is in response to offers for campus recruitment that these units in degree colleges have been getting mainly from information technology (IT) companies.

Under the plan, students studying in final year degree courses (for the academic year 2006-07), as well as those who passed the April-May, 2006 examination, can apply for placements.

According to sources, many companies have been approaching colleges under the university, in urban and semi-urban areas, for the last three years to recruit youngsters. This year, a few companies, including business process outsourcing (BPO) ones, approached the NSS units seeking potential candidates.

Gopal, the university's NSS programme coordinator, told that a prominent company had approached the NSS unit asking if it could arrange a recruitment programme. The company wanted to recruit youngsters for its Chennai and Mumbai offices. The company had also visited a college in Udupi recently but got only one candidate. It was looking for 100 candidates immediately. It would conduct written and listening tests before choosing candidates for interviews

Prof. Gopal said that students who were in the final year and wished to attend the job mela should have obtained 50 per cent marks in their first and second year examinations.

The drive was open to all degree students under the university, he added. The location of the mela was yet to be finalised.

Different companies have been recruiting students separately for the past three years now. This time, the NSS unit has planned to bring all such aspiring students under one roof.
