Mangalore, Nov 1: Karnataka headquarters of the Indian Coast Guard, here, would soon have an "extra-fast patrol vessel", ICGS Savitribai Phule, fitted with high-tech navigation equipment.
It will arrive shortly at New Mangalore Port. This ship is the fifth in the series of "extra-fast patrol vessels" designed and built by M/s Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard, according to sources in the Indian Coast Guard. The basing of the vessel at New Mangalore will be an added advantage to the effectiveness of Coast Guard mission on search and rescue, anti-piracy, anti-smuggling and maritime interdiction around the West Coast of India.
The ship, which is likely to arrive here in a week, will be placed under the control of Commandant M V Baadkar, Commander, Coast Guard District Karnataka.
The 265-tonne ship has a maximum range of 1,500 nautical miles and can attain speeds in excess of 35 knots.
