- The alliance begins Bone Marrow Transplantation at Manipal Hospital

Udupi, Oct 29: Manipal Education and Medical Group has entered into a partnership with the University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP), United States of America, to launch one of their globally renowned programmes in India. The two institutions today announced the alliance with the launch of a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Centre at Manipal Hospital.
The world’s first ever successful human bone marrow transplant was performed at the University of Minnesota for an infant with an immune deficiency syndrome in 1968. Today, they conduct one of the highest numbers of BMT’s in the world. The university also has several biomedical and technological firsts to its credit, right from open-heart surgery and cardiovascular devices to liver transplants, stem cell therapy, and functional MRI of the brain.
Manipal Hospital has put in place the UMP Protocols for the BMT Transplant Center in the month of July this year with two rooms at the moment, which will be increased to double digit soon.
The doctors in the two institutions are in direct consultation with each other over tele-video conferencing with medical direction provided by Dr Daniel Weisdorf, Director of the UMP adult BMT programme. Manipal Hospital will additionally provide capital and operating funds necessary to develop and operate the BMT Transplant Center in accordance with the UMP standards.
University of Minnesota Physicians is the practical plan for the full time faculty of the medical school cover comprised of over 650 physicians with annual revenues of greater than 220 million dollars per year. UMP’s mission is to advance clinical practice to support the medical school’s research and education missions while becoming a national leader in healthcare delivery. In addition to BMT programme, other outstanding programmes include cancer, cardiovascular care, solid organ transplantation, neurosciences and musculo-skeletal care.
