Udupi, Oct 3: The district excise intelligence bureau sleuths seized a lorry transporting spurious liquor and confiscated liquor and lorry worth Rs 20 lac on Sunday October 1.
The police received a sure tip off about the transport of spurious liquor on a lorry. Accordingly they were waiting for the same at Manchi near Manipal. When the persons in the lorry saw the police, they turned back the lorry and tried to flee back on the same way.
But the police chased them and managed to stop the lorry. Though the lorry driver Murthy, a resident of Tumkur and prime accused Prasanna Kumar, a local managed to escape, police arrested Haneef Honnavar. However, he too managed to escape from the police while in custody. He said to have gone to toilet while in custody but escaped from the window.
A pilot car was leading the lorry which was specially designed to transport liquor. It was a double body container lorry in which 7,000 litres of spirit, 1,800 litres of spurious liquor was stored. The police also seized the lorry. The total worth of seized goods is said to be Rs 20 lac.
