Asiad squash: Indian women beat Hong Kong in Group B


Incheon, Sep 24 (IANS): Indian women's squash team came back from a game down to beat Hong Kong 2-1 in a Group B match of the 17th Asian Games at the Yeorumul Squash Courts here Wednesday.

Top women's player, Dipika Pallikal who won the bronze in the singles event here, lost the closely-fought first match 11-5, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10, 9-11 to Annie Au Wing-Chi in a little over an hour to give Hong Kong a 1-0 lead.

Joshna Chinappa, who was ousted from the singles competition by Dipika, drew India level after another draining five-setter, winning 6-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9 in 58 minutes.

It seemed India were destined to go down 0-2 and lose the tie after Hong Kong's Chan Ho-ling took a 2-0 lead.

Joshna, though, refused to give up and fought back bravely to win the next three games to send the tie to a decider.

In the decider, it was again Hong Kong who took the early lead.

Tong Tsz-Wing won the opening game against Anaka Alankamony but the Indian youngster swiftly turned it around and won the match 8-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-5 in 59 minutes to give India the win.
