"Will take up 75% attendance issue with Goa University"

Panaji, Sep 22 (TNN): Pointing out that education goes beyond text books and compulsory attendance, chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said that he will take up the issue of 75% compulsory attendance rule for answering exams with the Goa University.

Addressing the gathering at Confederation of India Industries's (CII) 'Knowledge Connect' project on Sunday, Parrikar, who also holds the education portfolio, stated that the current education system in the country "kills the killer instinct."

"I will take up the issue with Goa University. The university rules provide that if you don't have 75% attendance, you cannot appear for exams. Is an exam conducted for attendance or for knowledge? I would not have passed IIT because my attendance was only 50%," said Parrikar.

Parrikar quickly cautioned the students not to interpret his statement regarding his attendance literally, justifying that he was the only student from his hostel to opt for metallurgy and that was the reason behind his low attendance.

The education minister stated that he felt that knowledge cannot be restricted and the education system needs to be revamped, at least restructured to see that students go beyond text books and compulsory attendance.
