Udupi, Sep 16: A state level weightlifting championship – 2014, for both men and women, being held in memory of retired chairman of Karnataka Bank Ltd, K S N Adiga and sponsored by international weightlifter, Arthur D'Souza was inaugurated at Chandar Palace Auditorium at Brahmavar in the district. The championship is being held in association with Brahmavar Sports Club, Karnataka State Weightlifters Association and Dakshina Kannada District Weightlifters Association.

Professor of Fr Muller College Mangalore, Dr K Raghuveer Adiga, who inaugurated the event, wished that this tournament will provide impetus for the weightlifters and will encourage them to register greater achievements. Karnataka State Weightlifters Association general secretary, Chandrahas Rai, who presided over the inaugural, advised sports persons to achieve great things with their efforts and staying away from use of performance enhancing drugs. He also advocated for providing more employment opportunities to sports persons.
