Puttur, Sep 22: The Puttur rural police have managed to arrest 'Gadiyar Ismail', who is suspected to be the prime accused in selling browning sugar in the taluk.
A few days ago, the police had seized huge quantity of brown sugar and had arrested four persons in this regard. Initial reports had then said that the seized substance was not brown sugar but some powder. But the arrested had claimed that it was old brown sugar. The police had also said that if the seized substance was brown sugar, it would value Rs 1 crore in the international market.
With the arrest of Gadiyar Ismail, all those doubts that it was only some powder have been put to rest. Gadiyar Ismail has revealed that he had bought this brown sugar from Mohammad and Hussainar, residents of Kerala, some five years ago at Madikeri. But within few days of selling the banned substance, both of them were arrested by Madikeri police. Having come to know about this, Gadiyar Ismail had buried the brown sugar for almost two years.
Once the Madikeri case had gone out of news, Gadiyar had removed the banned substance from the under the ground and had recently sold it to Shibaje resident Onachan who was later arrested by Puttur police. It is also said that Hussainar is currently residing in Chikmagalur district, while Mohammad is still living in Kollam district of Kerala.
Meanwhile the police have sent the sample of seized substance to forensic lab in Bangalore for testing.
