Mangalore, Sep 16: Somewhat the abattoir issue has been hitting headlines continuously.  All these days the official slaughter house at Kudroli was point of controversy.  Now that it is closed down, another proposed abattoir is making headline for other reasons. People from the villages of Kannagudde, Saripalla and Kandevu, have opposed the abattoir project planned by MCC at Kannagudde near Kulshekar here.

Speaking at a press conference Vincent Cutinho, president of Abattoir Protest Forum said that the Forum has planned protest and vehicle rally on Monday September 18 in this regard.

He further said that setting up of abattoir at Kannagudde would affect the people living not only in Kannagudde but also in Kandevu and Saripalla villages.  "Kannagudde area is already facing drainage problem and there is not even a proper access road.  So if the slaughter house is established it would harm and pollute the environment," he added.

MCC has planned the abattoir in a 10 acre land owned by one Krishnappa Mendon.  However, Cutinho said that even Krishnappa Mendon would join in the protest.  He also said that there are 1,500 houses and 3,000 people living in the area who would be badly affected.  He opined that since 85% of the residents are from non-meat-eating community, setting up of abattoir may lead to unnecessary problems.

Forum members Naveen Kandevu, Denis D'Silva Kulshekar, Kishore Kudur, Umesh Nuji and Chandappa were also present at the press conference.
