Kundapur, Sep 15: The newly-established weigh bridge at Ottinene near Shiroor here has been closed down within couple of days of its symbolic inauguration on Wednesday September 13.
The weigh bridge had been set up by Ore Exporters' Forum and was inaugurated on Monday September 11. It had been set up after endless protest by students, various local organizations which were well-led by Udupi MLA K Raghupati Bhat.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner had constituted a committee to manage the weigh bridge and Mysore Minerals had been given the overall in-charge of the weigh bridge. It was also decided to take Rs 30 each from each lorry.
But the forum has now suddenly closed down the weigh bridge protesting the district administration decision to hand over the weigh bridge to Mysore Minerals. The Forum has also vehemently opposed the administration for charging Rs 30 each from the lorry as against its decision to charge Rs 20 each.
Now the Byndoor in-charge tahshildar Sridhar and local revenue officials have locked-up the weigh bridge and special police personnel have been deployed on the spot. However, the ore-laden lorries are plying continuously on the highway.
