Mangalore, Aug 29: The mayor has passed stern orders to Mescom for their failure to ensure effecient street light repair works by contractors commissioned to carry out the work. The tender is to be revised and the contractors concerned are to be de-listed for the poor work they carried out in the 6 varied zones earmarked by the MCC.
Addressing a meeting of the MCC here on Thursday August 28, mayor Mahabala Maarla said that contractors who did not deliver results as expected would be de-listed. The mayor ordered that such contractors will not be allowed to participate in the bidding process when fresh tenders are called.
Many corporators were dissatisfied with the shoddy work done as the street lights continued to be a threat to pedestrians, some of them even on the verge of collapse. A few alleged that Mescom was not responding to the corporators's pleas to repair the street lights, and even if it did, the work was shoddy and not up to the standard.
He also said that MCC would write a letter to the central government about keeping the MCF in business as its closure would affect the 900 odd workers on its payroll.
One of the representatives questioned the mayor on the construction of multi-storey buildings like malls in the city, which caused a furore in the meeting. The corporator referred to a notice issued by the high court to the BBMP on malls collecting parking fee and said that such practice should be curbed in the city. The mayor replied that the issue would be discussed in the next meeting taking zonal regulations into consideration.
The mayor further said that the matter related to collection of revenue by single and multiple sites issuance by the MUDA would be discussed in the next meeting. The revenue collected, as pointed out by one of the officials, should be utilized for providing civic amenities and for city's development, he said.
Maarla said that there was as unspent fund of Rs 30 crore with the MUDA. A meaningful discussion would pave the way for finding solutions to technical problems in using the funds for development works. Besides, the corporation would write a letter to the state government urging it to take 193 acres land from the JESCO. The land would be availed for playground. Along with this, the MCC is looking for a suitable place to build a cricket ground with a sports complex inside the city.
