There has been a lot of incidents taking place like this. We need to find a solution to this problem. The solution I suggest is that the private bus drivers should be paid a fixed amount as salary, then there will be no problem of rash driving, overtaking to make more passengers in order to increase their income. As the result the intention of the bus drivers or conductors will turn towards the better service of the passengers instead of thinking about their wages.

I am going to write what i feel and what should bee done to ease this kind of a situation , not into response to what someone else has said or apolitical comment .
This young boy/man Tilak has lost his life even before it has started.Let us take two minutes to comprehend that first. Visualize this happening to you or your loved ones and how you would want society to help your cause.
I our busy worlds embroiled with daily chores of sustaining a livelihood where is our concern for TILAK. Dow e have time for him.
The way forward is a strong initiation towards change in the Indian Penal system . No political movement , no taking law into our own hands , will change the current situation . The agitation for change in the INDIAN PENAL SYSTEM has to start somewhere , why not from our hometown. We are a bunch of educated ,intellectually liberated people in comparison to almost all other cities, so let us pool in our intellectual capital and our own resources like personalities , finance , TIME, energy to make this a movement .
A poor TILAK has paid with his life for lack of change . Murders are common all over defined and driven by greed for possession of man and material. I will ask you one question only ? if a sentence was for 30-50 years or multiple life sentences depending on the nature of the crime, from negligence due to rash driving, texting while driving,murder,and other heinous crimes, ask yourself by what percentage due to think the CRIME RATIO would in comparison . The need of the hour is a change in judiciary and constitution and finance for the same through taxation .No one will complain paying 2% extra tax to build jails and support staff for the same for a SAFER INDIA . If you think what i am saying will make a difference then lets flag a movement to start towards a goal that may get fulfilled in time .

Let us all start a movement - avoid all the public buses. Let us not board these buses at all. It is a movement which might cost us some extra money, but at the end of the day, I am sure the declining revenue will force these people to think. If they do not listen to all our cries, they will definitely take notice of our act.

I was travelling by KSRTC once and this specific bus #51 created such a racket with its honking and trying to overtake all other buses with its eye-piercing honking. Good part is noone is bothered about this kind of mad behhavior. The bus driver is a hero for his passengers and especially the female passengers in the front. Conductors and drivers get their cut anyway. This nonsense has to be stopped by the traffic police.

This bus driver was not overtaking another bus but undertaking. Its a traffic rules violation and he is proven guilty beyond doubt based on the pictures published above. As long as the mentality of the drivers on the Indian roads does not change about the consequences of breaking rules these things will unfortunately continue to happen. Not sure whom to blame, but in this case the traffic authorities are to be blamed equally along with the bus driver.

It is a real shame that lives are cheap.
You know of the young schoolgirl at Maryhill who was standing at the busstop to go home with others and she was mowed down by a drunken tempo driver. Dead on the spot.
Wht was the punishment - a few months in jail which got over while the case was going on and Rs 4500/- yes four thousand five hundred fine.
What about compensation to the family under the MV Act- a real joke as cases of 11/12 years are still pending.
Sorry but we are slowly becoming mafia- land.

Please do not blame Traffic Police but blame your Criminal Elected Officials and Corrupt RTO personnel. Instead of taking Foreign Study trips,more Police Officers could be hired. I have been to RTO many times regarding the problems we face and they act like they are unaware of these. Looks like RTO is flying to His office in Helicopter. My fellow Mangaloreans please note: Today it may be sad day for Tilak's family. Tomorrow it may be ours. So let us get United and fight this menace of Bus drivers and Tipper drivers.
Note the following:
1. Now a new rowdy trend has started in Mangalore. The Cars and some other four wheeler are fitted with High Beam Focus lights. They make other drivers blind to drive. Many are Innova and Fortuner. Some vehicles have four to five high beam lights plus 2 headlights
2. Most of the cars belong to arrogant people have number plates with small letters which are invisible and some are stealth. These rogue owners want to hide these numbers for illegal purpose like Hit and Run.
3. There are now buses fitted with high intensity illuminating lights which they turn on and off while they are behind vehicle to scare you off.
4. Some buses are fitted with 2 or 3 different musical Horns which confuses to identify if there are multiple vehicles behind.
So my friends let us join together and take tough action.

Call 0824-222-0800 Police Control Room(PCR)

or area Traffic Stations like Kadri East 0824-222-0523 or any station which is closer and save someones' life.

Bus Drivers care too hoots for public safety. They are well aware that if they kill someone, the courts levy a fine of Rs. 5,000/- and simple imprisonment of 6 months. This is the compensation in India. Whereas in the Gulf one has to pay 1.60 crores if one life is lost. The meagre loss to the drivers is compensated by the owner of the bus, because they need them. Human life has no value for Drivers and their owners. They will pick up passengers anywhere they feel that too in the middle of the road, causing so much of inconvenience for other vehicles and also honk in front of the hospitals. Traffic Police has blocked Hampankatta junction traffic signal to ease traffic.Clock tower junction which was free earlier is clogging because of this and there is no traffic police there to regulate. Where are the traffic police gone? Are they busy collecting money somewhere else?

Go to any police station & take 5 years records, you will not find a single challan against bus whereas hundreds of challans against two wheelers. Every bus pays "mamuli". So they are beyond law. They can go wrong side They can use heavy horn They can install any number of headlights with out dimmers Thay can stop the bus in middle of the road inspite traffic They are exempted from seat belts Thay can drive having alcohol They can use mobiles while driving They can bully others in road They can transport goods They can accommodate more than 100 people in one bus They get fitness certificate without inspection They can use dark films in glasses of bus.... like this they can do so many things. .... just for 500 rupees "mamuli" per station This is india....... This will never change........

We in the city of Mangalore are not safe. Try walking on the footpath at the light house hill road, the footpath between Ladies club and the Mosque,you can find motorists and bus drivers using the footpath to overtake. One day we might have a student from KMC or St.Aloysius under a bus or car. Authorities should increase the level of the footpath,like the footpath at the Hampankatta junction before a life is taken away by the speeding motorists.

Why take action against owner? As long as he hires a driver with a valid Heavy Licence / badge. I was driving from Baikampady towards Mulki in the evening and three express busses overtook me at speed exceeding 80KM per hour within a span of three minutes. One was Halady, Udupi, other one Udupi Manipal and the third one Belman Karkal. Just imagine at that speed if they collide. God Save Us.

If the concerned authority wants to take action they can easily do it. Even if the driver has fled, collect copy of his DL from the Owner of the bus get it cancelled for say 10 years. Send the cancelled intimation to all bus owners in the district, publish in news papers so that no one appoints him again. Make this as a rule when there is a loss of life due to an accident. If this is strictly followed the drivers will learn their lesson. RIP Tilak.

Mangaloreans have a lot of patience, they quietly suffer, the same thing used to happen in Pune, some years ago, PMPML drivers were very rash, accidents were on the rise, Pune public lost patience,....what followed later on was thrashing of every PMPML driver who got involved in even minor accidents, so much that this resulted in fear among PMPML drivers, and now accidents have reduced...Mumbai public is even more dangerous, if this thing would have happened in Mumbai, this bus would have been torched by now...I don't justify violence but if the systems like Police departments turn a blind eye towards this nuisance, for a few bundle of notes then believe me that day won't be far when Mangaloreans walk in Punekars path.

What a pity that this poor man standing at a bus stop is fatally knocked down by a bus trying to overtake another bus. Are there any rules governing these reckless and arrogant city bus drivers and conductors? Even if there are, they are only on paper. These fellows are a law unto themselves and even the cops on duty think ten times before pulling up an errant driver. Just travel by any of the city buses and in eight out of ten cases you will be able to experience the reprehensible behaviour of the conductors. They have absolutely no respect for the passengers and that is because they are confident that their owners or their unions will bail them out. In this case also, I am sure, the driver who did not care two hoots for the persons standing at the bus stand will go scot free. We call ourselves a civilized society but indulge in such heinous crimes. As long as the nexus between the bus owners and the shameless politicians exists, we are destined to suffer. Today it is Tilak, tomorrow it could be either you or me.

Speeding & overtaking another bus in the intention of picking more passengers. Competition exists when buses are run by different companies. For them only business and innocent people lose life. No place is safe if the bus drivers are reckless.

I left Mangalore ages back and during my visit I totally lose my confidence to cross the road. I would rather catch a rickshaw than attempting to cross in the traffic. (to into some shop)

Some of these Bus drivers may have have been Rickshaw drivers in the past. They drive bus in the same manner as they drive a Rickshaw. These bus owners/ drivers needs to be dealt with very serious punishments/fines.
Also RTO authorities who issue licence to this kind of murders.

Immediate after above incident, the first thing police did is to cancel all the parking spaces available near bendoorwell, though there is no connection between above incident and parking spaces. Kind Attention to the City Corporation, RTO, Traffic Police that necessary humps must be made just 20-25 feet behind to reach every Bus Stop situated on the main road as well as put huge fine to those drivers' who stops bus to pickup passengers wherever they want. The main problem with local bus drivers in Mangalore is that, Arrogance reigns supreme in their heads, so much that they damn care about the traffic rules, and the main reason being, the owners of these buses are all politically connected,...so for the driver drive anyhow,..kill as much people out on the streets, as he knows his master, who is politically connected will get him out within minutes, and the reason for their arrogance is corruption in RTO and police departments, hand over a few bucks to these so called public servants and they will let out the bus, within few minutes with the same driver to kill some more people out on streets....Disgusting

How many more innocents have to perish before our administration wakes up. Our elected representatives make tall promises on development of infrastructure in the city. But have repeatedly fail to curb irresponsible and reckless movement of private busses and trucks. This is only because of lax attitude of our leaders, district administration and RTO. In such incident both bus and driving licence should be impounded immediately and should not be released. Their operating permit should be cancelled. Now what is happening is bus will be released after 2 days, driver gets bail and start driving again, court case will run for years and victims family will suffer for life

Some of these Bus drivers may have have been Rickshaw drivers in the past. They drive bus in the same manner as they drive a Rickshaw. These bus owners/ drivers needs to be dealt with very serious punishments/fines.
Also RTO authorities who issue licence to this kind of murders.

The Bus company in Mangalore is like the mafia and looks like nobody can touch them. Look at the way they race. Where are the Police, standing quietly somewhere. Look at the number of accidents and deaths, they go on honking nonstop and race. If the police have no control over them who can. The public should have given them a thrashing. From Balmatta to kankanady there are no speed breakers so they go on honking and racing. When will action be taken. Cases go on for years and they have to pay a minimal fine. The victim is not even given proper compensation.

in our city, buses keeping up their time is most important instead of safety first being their top priority.results we all know accidents,over-speed etc

bus on footpath !! how can a driver be given license for this kind of driving? unless there are restrictions on speed limit for buses and trucks these kind of incidents keep on happening. its matter of time before transport authorities takes some measures.
