Mangalore, Aug 27: Degree students of Kanachur Academy of General Education on Wednesday August 27 protested against the management, claiming that they were deprived of basic facilities due to ongoing construction of a medical college in the campus.
The management is in the process of constructing a medical college, for which it has permission, but the students allege that due to the ongoing construction work, they have been put to inconvenience as their basic facilities have been reportedly curtailed.
The protesting students said that sometime ago, they had submitted an appeal to the college management urging for facilities, and the management had promised to do so within a month. But even though a month has passed, the situation has not changed.
The students alleged that there are no separate toilets for boys and girls, and no proper road to the college either. Due to this, students, especially girls, are facing lot of incovenience and difficulties, they said.
They also claimed that though the college had taken library fee from each student, there is no library for the degree students.
The management in its response urged the students to cooperate as medical college is under construction, and promised to fulfil their demands soon.
The students also alleged that chairman of the institution U Kanachar Monu met them and 'threatened' to give them transfer certificates.
The protestors said that if the college does not meet their demands, they will take the help of all college students' union to intensify their protest in the coming days.
College Clarifies
Shortly after the protest by the students, the college management issued a clarification to the media stating that utmost care had been taken to ensure that students were not affected by the ongoing construction of the medical college and denied the allegation by the students that there were no separate toilets for boys and girls.
A clarfication from the college chairman U Kanachur Monu stated, "There have been a few obstacles due to the construction of a medical college, still, we have made alternate arrangements for the students so that they are not affected. We have halted the operation of the sawmill so that students are not troubled.
"The degree college building is as good as a five star hotel. Boys and girls have separate, clean and well-maintained toilets," he added.
Monu also claimed that a group with vested interests was provoking the students against the college. Without naming the group, he stated, "Unable to digest the progress and rise of the college, a group has been attempting to instigate the students and spoil the name of the college."
He also denied having spoken to the students over the issue. "I have been at home due to illness for last two days and have not spoken to the students on any matter. We will soon take them into confidence and examine the issues and problems they may be facing," he said.
