Mangalore, Aug 24: "Women from Bunt community have emerged as leaders in various fields. They have also fought injustice and upheld righteousness. This conference is organized to recall and preserve our tradition, culture and heritage," said Sadhvi Matanandamayi of Odiyoor Math.

She was addressing the gathering after inaugurating 'Shakti', a national-level Bunts women's convention organized under the auspices of Sri Siddivinayaka Prathistana and Sarvajanika Sri Ganeshostava Samiti at Bunts Hostel premises here on Sunday August 24.

"Bunt community follows matriarchal system. A woman can achieve anything but she should have the desire to achieve it. In contemporary scenario, women are subjected to violence and injustice, but we should face our problems bravely," she said.

She also said that woman is the divine power and moral energy, and that society could be changed through service-mindedness and dedication.

Shakunthala Shetty, MLA of Puttur, said, "We follow matriarchy system. Women belonging to this community have become role models to others right from the time of Rani Abbakka. Women have the capacity to achieve but hesitate to come forward. In bygone days women had special status; but today we have only degrees and doctorates. In our fight for equality, we have stepped down from our positions."

She added that the mother should be a good teacher to her son.

"A person who respects his mother will respect his nation. Like Goddess Durga, women should fight injustice," she said.

Kannada film actor Tara Anuradha said, "Do anything that brings honour to you. Woman has power but someone needs to remind her that she has it. Behind every successful man, there is a woman. If you work with self-respect and courage, you will achieve success."

She also lauded the chicken recipies of Tulunadu.

On this occasion, Meera Krishnappa, vice-president of Bunts Sangha Bangalore, Lata J Shetty, vice-president of Bunts Sangha Mumbai were present. Dr Asha Jyothi Rai welcomed.

11 months before my sister Reshma committed suicide, due to physical & mental harassment from her husband and in-laws in Karkala after coming back from Muscat. She left a death note also. But, till date no charge sheet has been submitted to court by karkala police. Getting justice in this country is very difficult. Women from bunts community have done a lot of sacrifice in the past. Whether the wives of a farmer or wives of businessman they have supported their husband and children and their extended family. I personally know a bunts lady who was based in Mumbai looked after her entire family (back home in Mangalore) and guided the fortune of young relatives who used to travel to Mumbai on those days. She provided shelter in her one room kitchen house to anyone coming from Mangalore. I have seen several ladies like that in Mumbai. Today though the priorities have changed. Money has brought its ills. Most of them are not bothered about any one and indulge in display of their wealth in a real vulgar manner. If you attend a large marriage ceremony you get to see the vulgarity and displaying of wealth. I wish the bunts ladies remained like the one I saw in |Mumbai.......

Frankly speaking-Bcoz of non unity/lack of genuine political leaders raise in community/jealously between distinguished personalities in community,...etc.., its very sad to admit that,The community that, once ruled whole southern penesula, built and lead many famous temples kings like Ullala Rani Abbakka, Udyavara Barakur kings,Hoysala and vijayanagara dynasty's given Tulunadu a rich and rich culture, heritage...IS IN DECLINE...God save Bunt community

It is good to see a galaxy of prominent bunt people at this event. Indeed members of the Bunt community have emerged as leaders in different spheres.

I have had the pleasure of knowing several of them. Recently I had the unique privilege of meeting Mohan Alva in Moodbidri. He is a role model to entrepreneurs. He has practically built a city by itself in this historical place.

I say kudos to my bunt friends and to all bunts.

I wish all the best to Bunt community, who are in the forefront in many good activities. I like the words of MLA who said women should fight for equality and mother should be a good teacher to her son.

Only if the son learns to love and respect two people on this world, the most,
One who has given birth to him
and the other who has taken birth just for him, then there is no fighting for equality.
