Karkala, Aug 23: A person reportedly raped a mentally unsound girl residing in a house at Nallur near Bajagoli in the taluk when she was alone. After a complaint was filed and once he learnt that the police were after him, the youth tried to commit suicide by consuming poison.

The accused has been identified as Jagga alias Jagadeesh (50). He knew that the girl in question, who has been suffering from mental disorders, was alone at her home. He broke the door of the house, entered her house and escaped after raping her. Once the incident came to light and it became clear that he would be nabbed, it is said he started moving about with a bottle containing a poisonous substance in his pocket. When the policemen gathered information about his whereabouts and he was about to be cornered, he consumed poison and tried to commit suicide.

The police have since admitted him into the taluk government hospital here. The girl in question has been subjected to medical examination.

The family of the girl stated above lived in penury. Media reports also had tried to highlight the travails the family had been going through some years ago. After this, Mumbai Buntara Sangha representatives visited the home of the girl and extended help by assisting the family to build a new house, apart from providing financial assistance. The Sangha also had helped the family in conducting marriage of the sister of the above girl.

The animalistic tendency shown by the man, who in normal course would have been expected to be sympathetic towards the ailing girl and her family, has come in for all-round criticism from people from all walks of life.
