Mangalore: Konkani Manyata Divas celebrated with enthusiasm

Mangalore, Aug 20: 'Konkani Manyata Divas', commemorating the inclusion of the Konkani language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, was celebrated at Town Hall here on Wednesday August 20 with enthusiasm. The programme was organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy.

The opening ceremony began with mayor Mahabala Maarla hoisting the Konkani flag. Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Roy Castelino briefed about the day's events.

Addressing the gathering, mayor Mahabala Maarla said, "I am happy to see people from 41 various Konkani speaking communities under one roof. We have to preserve Konkani language and pass it on to the future generation. Schools and colleges need to support the students to learn Konkani."

Walter D'Mello, deputy director of public education department, DK, said, "'Konkani Manyata Divas' must be celebrated not only through dance, songs or other events; Konkani should also be respected as mother tongue and spoken in our day-to-day lives." He also congratulated Roy Castelino on organizing the event in a grand manner.

Students and various associations performed in talent shows. As many as 23 teams participated in the event.

Cyprian Monteiro and other Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy memebers were present during the opening ceremony.

The valedictory will be held later in the evening.
