Kasargod: Court orders to entrust female child to couple who bought her

Kasargod, Aug 18: The district court at Thalassery has ordered entrusting of the female child out of two children of a couple from Hosdurg, who had been sold by them through a Mangalore-based lawyer to a couple from Suratkal who had bought her.

P M Sulaiman and his second wife, Fathima, hailing from Kanhangad Muriyanavi and living in rented house in Kushalnagar, Hosdurg, had sold their two children for monetary consideration in May this year.

The girl child was reportedly sold for Rs 1.75 lac, and the male child, for Rs 1.5 lac, to two different families. A Mangalore-based lady lawyer from Urwa, had reportedly facilitated this sale, the prosecution said. Out of the two, the girl child had been sold to a person named Subrahmanya living in Suratkal. The police had taken over custody of this girl child from him and handed it over to Child Welfare Committee.

Subrahmanya and his wife had approached the district court at Thalassery, seeking custody of the girl child, for taking care of her and providing her a secure future. The court, considering this application, ordered to hand over the 30-month-old child back to the custody of the said childless couple.

It is learnt that the lawyer in question has remained elusive, and the police have not been able to find her whereabouts so far. As such, the task of detecting the male child has also not been possible. Lookout notices issued by the policemen, who had also contacted Mangalore Bar Association in the past, for searching the lawyer have failed to be of any avail.

Rashid from Kolavayal, Basheer from Kundapur and working as taxi driver, and Moidu, working in a slaughterhouse and residing near Iqbal Higher Secondary School, who reportedly worked as middlemen for this sale, have already been arrested in this case.
