Udupi: Woman loses Rs 3.5 lac in lucky draw !

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 18: A woman living in Adarshanagara on Alevoor Road, Badagabettu in the city is learnt to have lost heavily, after having been lured by the offer of making money through lucky draw. This bait had been laid out to her through cell phone calls.

Geetha (47), wife of Chandrashekhar from Adarshanagara, who followed up her urge to make the best of this offer and strike it rich, got frustrated after the demand for payment of 'taxes' continued to pour in, and never seemed to dry up. She then filed a complaint in Manipal station.

It is learnt that an unidentified person called her on August 4 from mobile phone No. 92316358229, informing that her mobile phone number won US$ 25,000 in a lucky draw, and sought payment of tax due towards this prize money to the government. It is said that the caller conversed in Hindi.

Depending on this and subsequent calls for payment, Geetha transferred a total sum of Rs 3,50,000 in 15 installments to different account numbers from her account with State Bank of India. The latest demand for further payment of Rs 50,000 came as the last straw on camel's back, as Geetha lost her patience and decided to approach the police.

Never ever believe with all these mobile calls or emails as they are all fakes. Just ignore them and if possible contact the person and get the details and immediately contact the police about this. These idiots are all cheats and bogus people. I too get many such calls and emails but I just ignore them. Sometimes I just tell them to send the million dollar as advertised.

While expressing my sympathy to the victim,I also wonder how people can fall prey to such frauds? There are hundreds of such messages circulating either through SMS and internet.I have been receiving many such SMS informing about the Jackpots, lucky draws. That too in foreign currency and in crores of rupees. In the last week alone I have received two SMS in my cell and one in e-mail,the recent being the 100,00000 sterling pound message.Although I have not responded them, I started thinking from where it is coming, how it can come and who is remitting? My parents are no more, left heavenly abode three years back,I am retired and not invested any money? Then how it can be?I am not that much fool to respond their call, message and e-mail.They even asked me to send Rs 16,000/-as advance money collect that jackpot money? How shrewd they are?
It is amazing to note that in spite of periodic Police alert, warning, people are falling prey to such frauds only in the greed of becoming overnight millionaire.Even educated people, retired government officers, bank managers are falling prey to such frauds. For God sake don't respond such fraudulant SMS,messages and the regrete.Beware of such SMS,messages.Don't try to become overnight millionaire.Be cautious.Don't go after the money. The said woman might have gone after hearing the news about lucky draw and thus lost 3.5 lac rupees, which is not small amount.I feel pity for her.Gone is gone, she will get again.Police complaint does not serve her purpose.Just for name sake. Some times police department staff may also involve.Hand in gloves.don't trust anybody now a days.Zamana karab hai. This is a wake up call for others.Satisfy with what you got with you at present.Don't be greedy. That greed, lust spoils you totally

Does she pay taxes to the IT ? if she did, she would have been careful and not stupid.

    Paying taxes without filing returns
of forms, is sheer blind stupidity. Well it looks good as Geeta has a lot of money which she can afford to loose.

    No use filing complaints now.

While empathizing with the victim despite so many cases being reported almost daily, this victim has fallen prey due to sheer greed from the very fact that she, without confiding into anybody, went on heeding to the diktats of the cheats and filled their coffers!!

Normally such cheats operate with fake accounts or accounts of some innocent gullible people whom they promise a certain commission for each deposit received putting the innocent in trouble resulting in a dead end!! These scams were the brain child of some dubious Nigerian groups!!

This kind of cheating through mobiles and emails requires public awareness. Simple people do not understand and become victims. The government should take strict measures and give publicity of the danger involved. Institutions and individuals also can create awareness. I know a person who has been caught up with the CBI by getting involved in such an affair through internet as he was contacted by a criminal company from abroad. Let's make simple people aware.

Reverend Father, I fully agree with you that governments must play an active role in making the public aware. However, knowing how governments function we cannot leave it to them alone. Private social service organisations, individuals and may be even religious institutions must also contribute to educating the ordinary public on these matters.

Another reason we cannot only depend on government institutions is because cheats are always one or a few steps ahead of the government, therefore, I believe private social service organisations and individuals must play a bigger role in creating public awareness for the simple and ordinary people.

I would like to add one more point to my earlier comments. More often than not the person who has been cheated feels ashamed/embarrassed to reveal that he/she has been made a fool of. This makes con persons bolder to carry out their activities as they believe they will not be caught/exposed quickly or easily.

We are all human and we do make mistakes and errors of judgement. So, if unfortunately you have been cheated, be courageous enough to come forward and complaint before the con person cheats a dozen more people.

Greed or Desperation for financial help or sometimes over confidence are the chief causes for people falling for such deception.

Remember that nothing comes free in this world. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Con persons can come in any form - male, female, young, middle-aged, old, well dressed, well educated, sweet talking etc.

They will do anything to win your confidence and once they do that they will cheat/trick you.

Con persons are finding newer and more innovative ways day by day to cheat.

Sometimes con persons come in the form of a charitable person and for example may even give you some money/gifts but before you realize it he/she would have taken away 10 times that amount from you.

Only solution to this is to be aware and be alert all the time. In the process you may sometimes mistrust a genuinely good person but in such cases it is okay to err on the side caution than be made a fool of.
