Kumta, Aug 17: The police have arrested a student for allegedly forwarding a message that mocked the National Anthem in Tulu language and making insensitive and insulting remarks about India.
Jabeer A Khan (21), final year BCom student of a college in Kumta, was arrested by the Karwar police.
On Independence Day, the student who got a clipping of the National Anthem in Tulu language with mocking lyrics sent it to his friends in a chatting group and to another college friend.
One of his friends who received the message reportedly objected to it, to which the accused allegedly replied with insulting remarks on India.
The next day some of his friends and their parents loged a complaint in Kumta police station, after which Jabeer was arrested.
On Saturday August 16, hundreds of students and leaders of social organizations staged a protest at Kumta police station condemning the alleged remarks against India.
Karwar SP R Dilip visited the spot and urged the students to maintain peace. Bhatkal DySP Muthuraj also arrived at the spot, and the police brought the situation under control.
The SP assured that the police would take action against the student who made the insensitive remarks. It is said that the student used obscene words while referring to India.
