Mangalore, Aug 15: After sweating it out for over 17 days, Meredian College, Ullal lifted the 18th Independence Day Football Cup following high-packed action at Nehru Maidan here on Friday August 15.
The final match was between Meredian College, Ullal and Rosario College, Mangalore. Meredian College, Ullal scored 2-0 to win the cup.
The tournament which was inaugurated by mayor Mahabala Maarla saw participation from 229 teams this year. It is worth mentioning that the first Independence Cup saw just 25 teams, and over the years this number has increased to 229.
Large crowds gathered at the stadium to watch the final match. Loud cheering and applause from the gathering boosted the spirit of players.
The matches were followed by the presentation ceremony during which prizes were handed over to all the winners.
Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district A B Ibrahim in the post match ceremony said "I am happy to see 4000 players come forward to play football in a small city and it is undoubtedly a proud moment. With the support of Mangalore city corporation, we need to build a new football stadium."
Jairam Hande, senior general manger of Karnataka Bank said he was ready to support any future sports event.
Govinda Bhat S G, Union Bank branch manager, deputy mayor Kavita, Mohan Ameen, D M Aslam, chairman DKFA and others were present.
Dinesh Karthik compered the event.
