Udupi, Aug 15: The 68th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour at MGM ground here on Friday August 15. Udupi district in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake hoisted the Tricolour and received the guard of honour.
Sorake in his address said, "It is our duty to commemorate the great personalities who sacrificed their lives for the nation."
He said that each individual was free and equal before the law. He further said that Gandhiji’s dream should be realiazed and the principle of secularism should be upheld by each individual.
"Children are the future of the nation. Government has implemented several schemes for the welfare of the deprived class. Nearly Rs 2 crore is granted to Udupi as subsidy every month by the government under the Anna Bhagya scheme," he added.
He also said that monthly pension was being paid to 1125 Endosulfan victims and the total grant of Rs 199 lac had been released for their treatment in the district.
"Prachya Prajne, a special programme by the education department for the high school students will be implemented in order to create awareness about our heritage," he added.
Vibrant cultural programmes were showcased on the occasion, in which eight teams participated. Nearly 20 educational institutions participated in the parade. Sorake and other guests felicitated the achievers in various fields including education.
DC Muddumohan, ZP CEO Kanagavalli, ZP president Savitha Shivanand, SP Rajendra Prasad, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, CMC president Yuvaraj and others were present.
