Mangalore: Financial loss drives family of three to suicide

Mangalore: Attempts to harm reputation led Shailesh to end life, reveals death note

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Update: August 15

Mangalore, Aug 15: The deaths of three members of a family, including a child, in an apparent suicide pact has sent shockwaves and left a pall of gloom in Hoigebail area. Shailesh, his wife Savitha and their 10-year-old daughter Vidhyalakshmi were found dead in their residence 'Srinivasa' on Thursday August 14 afternoon.

It has come to light that financial crisis and allegations aimed at slandering his name by certain persons led Shailesh to take this extreme step.

Shailesh had been running Akshaya finance firm for the last seven years. Initially, there were four partners, out of which two backed out later, and Shailesh and another partner were running the firm till date. It is said that after the two partners left, the firm underwent losses. The firm promised high interest rates to investors and many people deposited their money, it is learnt. However, after the two partners left, those who had taken loans from the firm failed to pay back on time, which led to losses and heavy financial crisis. Shailesh then decided to free himself of the troubles by ending his life along with that of his wife and daughter, it is said.

In the four-page death note, Shailesh stated a number of reasons that led him to commit suicide. The death note names several persons including Uday, Harish and others. Shailesh stated that Uday was pestering him to pay him money, even though Shailesh reportedly did not owe him anything. He was constantly asking him money that someone else had given, Shailesh said, adding that Uday even filed a complaint against him with police and attempted to slander his name in some of the media too.

"It was projected that I owed him Rs two crore, and when my wife and child came to know of this, they were horrified and did not want to live anymore. My reputation was harmed in some of the media which had published a picture of me putting a garland of currency notes on a person disguised in tiger costume," stated the death note.

Police sources said that based on Uday's complaint, a case was filed against Shailesh and a chargesheet too was submitted.

Speaking to media persons about the circumstances that led to the discovery of the bodies, Shailesh's friend and former corporator Kamalaksha Salian said, "Shailesh and I became friends several years ago. I spoke to him on phone on Tuesday. After that, whenever I called the phone would ring without anyone answering the call. Many others also phoned Shailesh but their calls too went unanswered. Hence it seems that they might have died on Tuesday night. The watchman of the apartments suspected that something was wrong, and when he looked in through the bedroom window, he saw the child lying lifeless. He then alerted the neighbours and together we broke open the door."

He further said, "Shailesh had received threats some years ago, but I do not know of any threats in recent times. I never imagined that the family would take such an extreme step."

Ice cream cups were found near the bodies, and it is suspected that Shailesh might have mixed poison with the ice cream and given to the child and her mother, before himself committing suicide by hanging. A bottle of liquor too was found.

Police commissioner R Hitendra, ACP Tilakchandra and others were at the spot. Further investigations are in progress.

Mangalore, Aug 14: In an apparent suicide pact, a man, his wife and their child were found dead at their residence at Hoigebail here on Thursday August 14.

The deceased have been identified as Shailesh (39), his wife Savitha and their daughter Vidhyalaxmi (10).

The incident came to light on Thursday afternoon, but it is suspected that they might have died two days ago.

It is said that the security guard at the apartments where they stay grew suspicious as none of the residents ventured out of their house for the past two days, he went to check. When no one answered the door, he alerted the neighbours, and when the door was finally opened, all three were found dead. Incidentally, the television was on when the door was forced open.

Shailesh was found hanging while Savitha is suspected to have consumed poison after administering the same to their daughter.

Vidyalakshmi was a student of 5th standard in Canara School. The family had been earlier residing in Boloor. Neighbours said that they were last seen on Tuesday August 12.

Shailesh left behind a four-page death note wherein he stated that financial loss had led him and his wife to take this extreme step. He was running Akshaya finance firm, and after his partners left the firm over some dispute, he suffered huge losses.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Urwa police led by cirlce inspector Ramachandra Maledevar arrived at the spot. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

"I Believe", guys in finance are the biggest crooks in the world. They believe that they can get money to work for them and also manipulate the system in a way that the house (they) always wins. The chit fund guys and their ponzi schemes don't last as long as their bigger counterparts who can manipulate the government to print currency and term it something like 'stimulating economy'.
I am not a savvy finance guy, but whatever terms they use to sound important they end up ruining the common man for their gain.
Look at our Banks, with the latest Syndicate bank scan. It is not just this specific bank but check the life style of the bank MD/Chairman where do they get it from if they are simply salaried ??. Harshad Mehta, Jignesh .... the list is on ... I will include Vijaya leasing to this mix as well

Desire for quick money will lead to people to desperate conditions that may lead them to commit suicide. Instead of committing suicide he should have confided his problems to his close friends who might have helped him to come out of his desperation and also instead of writing peoples name in death note he should have filed a complaint in police against the persons harassing him. They died of desperation, let their souls rest in peace. Its heartbreaking to see the death of a young child who died so young for no fault of hers.

These chit fund and finance companies are responsible for so many suicides in our districts. I head that they even charge 5% interest/month sometimes maybe more. Many people live beyond their means or host dinners, spend lavishly on houses, vehicles, pay dowry or celebrate festivals lavishly all using borrowed money especially from KURI(I do not know what that means) or from borrowed money. Ultimately when the time comes to pay they are nowhere. The borrower and lender both are at risk and finally they think that committing suicide will liberate them. So sad. Why not goonda act on unlicenced money lenders?.

    RIP!!

What a tragic end!! All these finance and blade cos. only survive for the first few years by somehow managing the show by churning the money that comes in and goes out!! However, at a certain threshold point, they are bound to breakdown and default and when the amount balloons to crores of rupees with so many aggrieved creditors, it is really impossible to run away from the situation created leading to such disastrous consequences!!

Technically, it is impossible to give high interest rates by doing any business, except money lending to high risk people and generating money from that!! But the chances of such loan takers defaulting is extremely high and even if a few big ones default, the business is finished!! Surprising that still, knowing the pitfalls of this biz, so many greedy people go and invest their hard earned money in such schemes and lose all of it!!

The above view is only a 'generic' opinion on the risks of finance businesses and not about this sad incident!!

Kill yourself, but why kill your family ? Couldn't he have spared the lives of his wife and his child who may have well had a good future ? He was only 39, he could have recovered somehow/somewhere. The increasing suicides of young families is a result of pressure to do amass wealth in a short time so one can match their peers. It is wrong. Wealth can come in many forms and not necessarily financial.Life is a test match and not a 20/20. Live and let live. If you have one reason to die, you have a million reasons to live.

The above case occurred becoz of not planning properly. One should be aware of planning at the very young age which will give fruit at the rainy days.

Always believe in Charlie Chaplin's quote "Nothing is permanent in this world,Not even our Troubles "..
Everyone has problems,it may be financial problem, health problem, relationship problem or anytype of problem..One has to wait, sometimes one has to wait for a long time to overcome the problems..Suicide is not the solution..Before concluding my comment, let me give you one good example of attempted suicide case in Kerala..

Last month,Kerala Police caught one notorious thief who was involved in nearly 100 robbery cases..While he was being interrogated in police torture room, thief said one interesting story. One night thief broke window and entered one house to loot.To his utter shock house owner, wife and two children were crying silently..For a minute, thief became human..he asked them what happened? They told their story and showed him poison bottle to end their life..Thief snatched it and had thrown bottle out of window..He gave them Rs.5000/- which he robbed from other house..slept there only..Next day boght rice for them..stayed there for one week till he got caught ! Inspector was shocked to hear the news..He made an investigation to know whether thief was saying right thing..He met family who tried to commit suicide before..!! I don't remember thief or family's name..When I read this article, GOOD THIEF story(real) came to my mind..Please believe Charlie Chaplin..LIFE is Beautiful..Trouble is Not Permanent ..you have to have patience..
