Mangalore, Aug 9: Vishal Shetty of SDM College of Business Management took charge as the president of Mangalore University All College Students' Union (ACSU) for the academic year 2014-15 here on Saturday August 9.
In the inaugaural function of the Union held at Town Hall here, minister for fisheries and sports and youth services, Abhaychandra Jain lit the traditional lamp along with MLC Ivan D'Souza, MCC mayor Mahabala Maarla, deputy mayor Kavitha Vasu, MLA J R Lobo, social activist M G Hegde and district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Abhayachandra Jain congradulated Vishal Shetty on being elected the president of the Union. He also asked the students to uphold the heritage and culture of Dakshina Kannada.
"Students must contribute to the growth of the nation and by 2020 India should emerge as a stong nation," he said.
J R Lobo in his address said, "Students are the backbone of the nation. Students should give importance to human values and reduce the usage of gadgets. Dakshina Kannada has many colleges and institutions, I want to see DK become the education capital of India."
MLC Ivan D'Souza thanked the All College Students' Union for producing leaders for the service of country. He appealed to the students to fight against menace of rape and irradicate it from society. He also extended his full support to the Union.
MLA Mohiuddin Bava in his address said, "India is a land of youth and diversity. Students need to excel in education and also in sports." He also spoke on 'Mangalore United' cricket team for the upcoming Karnataka Premier League 2014 (KPL) in Mysore on August 28.
The oath taking ceremony was conducted by MLC Ivan D'Souza. Vishal Shetty as president, Mohith Salian as student coordinator, Sathwik Rai as general secretary took oath along with other office-bearers of the Union for the year 2014-15.
A donation of Rs 10,000 for a needy student was given by by ACSU.
Vishal Shetty after the oath taking ceremony said, "I am happy to be the president of ACSU. I will deliver my duties well. I also seek the help of media to achieve our goals."
Pili Vesha, Nasik band and chende added to colour to the event.
Former MP Ibrahim, Mamatha Gatti, A C Bhandary, Praveen Chandra and others were present. Tansif compered the programme.
