Mangalore, Aug 9: An exclusive computer training programme for Christian students was organized by the Directorate of Minorities, Government of Karnataka in collaboration with ACCPL (Aditya Call Center Private Limited) at Sahodaya here on Saturday August 9.

Addressing the gathering, director of Directorate of Minorities Government of Karnataka, Akram Pasha said, "The Department of Minority Welfare has provided various beneficiary schemes to six communities for their development. During 1999-2000, the government set aside Rs 23 crore in the budget, but today, the government has set aside Rs 800 crore.

"Though they are several schemes for the development of minorities, people fail to utilize them. This is because of administrative problem and lack of awareness. The department has also given a proposal to the government to increase the strength of staff which will soon be materialized. There are 28 schemes in the department for the development of minorities," he said.

"To educate people about various schemes, the department has set up information centers in 30 districts. A similar centre in Mangalore is at Kankanady. Staff in these centers will provide information about various schemes. Facilities of computers to download the application and a photocopy machine will also be provided," he added.

"The department will provide scholarship schemes for minority students so that they can educate themselves without any financial constraints," Pasha said.

Akram Pasha further elaborated on the minority scholarships and said, "The four types of scholarship schemes are pre-metric, post-metric, merit-cum-means scholarship for professional and technical courses, and national overseas scholarship. The scholarship amount will be directly credited to the student's account through an online transfer. The government is also providing incentives for minority students. It has also offered several schemes for the development of minorities to utilize the given opportunity."

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Milagres parish priest Fr Valerian D'Souza said, "The entire world is living with technology. Earlier man was in search of technology but today technology has reached his doorstep. Technology has changed the world. Even children are well versed with computer technology.

"Technology has improved the quality of life, it saves us time. Now technology has reached your doorstep. You should utilize this opportunity," he added.

MLA J R Lobo who was also present on the occasion said, "The Constitution has provided protection and rights to minorities in order to bring them to the mainstream. The government has introduced various schemes for the empowerment of minorities but they have failed to make use of them. We should utilize government provided schemes. It is also our responsibility. There is lack of awareness about the schemes. If any individual avails the facility, that should be discussed with people so that everyone will be aware of the scheme."

S P Thirunavukkarasu, managing director of ACCPL training division briefed about the training offered in the programme.

Sabeer Ahmad Mulla, district minority welfare officer was present on the occasion.

Hi Kodi, there must be some reason why it was denied. Should have tried to find out. Many a times, the bank a/c no. given is not correct, your parent's income may be more than the limit or marks are not enough to avail. The dept. puts on the website the reason and asks to rectify the mistake. You should find out the reason. For your info. there is incentive money given to PUC, degree and post degree students also, the amount is Rs 3000, 4000, 5000 respectively. it is called Uttejana scheme and it is open now, forms are available on website. Try to get this if you belong in one of the above course.
You have to submit the application at district minority office, from there it will be forwarded to Bangalore office.

People, we have to educate ourselves first, before passing comments. In India, five (5) communities - Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jain and Parsis, have been classified as minority communities for your information. After thorough research these communities have been d as minorities. There are scholarships from 1st standard students till Phd, Mphil etc but scholarships are given to those students whose parent's income is under certain level and the student has a certain percentage of marks, mostly 50%. There are other requirements also, scholarships are not just distributed. These scholarships were there for the past many years but awareness was not there. We should help the deserving students to avail these benefits, let them educate themselves. This is the only way the economic empowerment will dawn in our poor families. If you click on www.gokdom.kar.nic.in you will get all the details how it has been done. These scholarships mostly cover the tuition fee paid by the student to the school/college and some cases hostel fee too, which helps a lot to decrease the financial burden on the parents in educating their child. There are benefits to other communities also e.g. SC and ST,and economically weaker sections , you have to just look into govt. websites like dept. of Social Welfare etc. Let us always remember that educated children are our future generation.

Shame on Congress. How far they think go on dividing the nation on cast and religion?

I education, jobs and even a liniency in crime!! One fool, who previously throwned the Home minister sai minorities should noot be arrested!!

Instead bring in some educational programmes to minority parents. Educate them about family planning so that they are burdened with more children than they can manage. When there are only one or two children, they are well attended to and get well education and participate in nations growth. Unlike the current situation where children are left to their own, who end up in all sorts of crimes and social menace!

    Dear Shankar,
About family planning and education to children, to which community you are referring?
I know whom you are referring, but if you don't clarify, wrong message may go to ignorant people.
I say community because, I myself do not like minority & majority causing unnecessary divisions.

The most important thing for minorities is to learn to stand on their own feet and not to depend on government dole outs. It is only when you start relying on yourself that you build the confidence that is necessary for progress. Government schemes for minorities should be used only as ancillaries.

I don't think Rs.800 crore will see the light of day. Again, this will be one more stick for some members of the majority community to wave against the minority community. So, do not have these schemes and lets live together without animosity.

First of all our community is hesitant to take Govt. benefits.
It is good in a way.
Work for your progress is good ethics. We will learn to retain the progress made.
If benefits are available, it should be made well known and simpler, so that deserving candidates are enabled to make use of it.

@jeevana - go and tell it to sanghis and bjpee walas who are polarizing the Majority community, This is evident in the fact that they are busy "engineering" riots in U.P for vote bank politics.

bJpee walas should practice what they preach!
