Mangalore, Aug 8: Following incessant rains over a week, the roof of DK Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, Bajal Padpu, established three decades ago, collapsed on Friday August 8, even as a memorandum urging repair of the school is sitting in the ZP office since one year.

However, in a temporary respite to the long-pending problem of the school that teaches more than 150 children, Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo sanctioned Rs 4.50 lac from the MLA fund after he visited the site following the incident.

Meanwhile, chief executive officer Tulasi Maddineni of the zilla panchayat said that there were no funds left for repair work in the treasury and she would visit the school soon as she was out of station on an official trip.

Maddineni said, “The ZP is now faced with a financial crunch. We have no dedicated fund for the repair works and as much as Rs 30 crore is needed if we have to repair all schools under ZP." When asked about the memorandum requesting repair works, she said that the ZP was only spending money on the infrastructural development of rural schools.

“For a building built in the year 1978, the school during every monsoon, undertakes patch work from a fund earmarked under the Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana. I remember, last year a temporary solution was drawn up for repairing the roofs of the buildings,” said Jaya, headmistress of the school. The school had spent about Rs 20,000 on this.

“However, as the building is very old it failed to withstand the heavy rains that have been incessantly pouring over the last week. Memorandums sent to corporates, MLAs, and ZP have not seen any response. Today, luck favoured the school in that there were no injuries caused. The school had shifted most of the students to a nearby hall expecting some untoward incident,” she added.

Fahira, a parent who sends her children to the school, said no place in the school is safe. “There are two buildings, one built in 1986 and another in 1978. The buildings are posing severe threat as they are on the verge of collapse. We are having second thoughts about sending our children to school,” she added.

When asked about the new hall where most of the students have been shifted, she lamented that the condition of the hall is also no different and added that the school has to be rebuilt to ensure the safety of the children.

Block education officer Jnaneshwar said that the department will exclusively focus on repair of the hall which has RCC roof, from the funds granted by the MLA, since the hall has the capacity to accommodate more number of students. He added that any leftover funds would be utilized to rebuild the tail-roofed building.

such a huge shame on previously ruled and present ruling parties. What is the concerned ZP committee is doing. How much cost it will take for the govt to reinstate this school building. Common guyz, its unbelievable. I request and urge the locals of this area to set a march to the ZP office, and get hold of the ZP president and his team. why they cant highlight such issues to the higher authority. how come its so late to uncover such stories. Please inform this to the elected representative to take immediate action and to look for similar cases in and around the locality. I agree the fact that, the population of govt schools has been drastically reduced due to the advent of private schools. our poor community is entirely relied on such schools, if govt doesn't care our poor class, we will never support anyone in any matters. Let the poor community get the all facility from the government. each GP & ZP should form committees to tackle such issues (not like BDs who are always after cows n moral policy)that may benefit our poor community. one who enjoy his life alone is a sadist. Please think about those who cannot enjoy, please share small percentage of your enjoyment for those who cannot afford. God bless you All.

Building one School for the Poor is better than building Hundred Temples. Instead of spending Rs.40 lakhs on just one night Nagamandala, you just spend only Rs.4 lakhs to repair a school,God will be more pleased.
When Govt is facing financial crunch the people can contribute and get the school in their Area repaired. Huge Amount collected for pompous celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi or Dasarah can be diverted towards school repairs.

Every thing will collapse in our country. ZP officials, Politicians, & Contractors of our country r worst corrupt people. Look at some of our Government offices, Port trust offices,BBMP offices in Bangalore, Government Schools,
Post offices, Police Stations, Meat,Fish & Vegetable markets. Railway Stations, Buss Stands. Every thing is ruined. Crores of rupees r sanctioned in the budgets every year which is completely pocketed by our corrupt officials. They have no concern for cleanliness & Maintenance. There is no supervision at all. Shame on our Corrupt Politicians for ruining & looting our Country for 66 long years. I am sure Britishers would have kept better control on these civic issues.

I wonder DK Zilla Panchayath waiting for a disaster to struck in all ZP primary/secondary schools across Udupi /DK.I visited dozens of Govt schools in our taluk and the condition of the maintenance of the school is very very poor.

There are funds for maint of schools every year from ZP and even village Panchayth also has provisions to spend sums to govt schools. In Belthangady taluk Arombody govt Primary school already made headline for the same reasons and fortunately there is no causalities.DDPI,for his part no action,School betterment committees are under quota system where they are just meant for name sake...unlike olden days wealthy people are made SDMC chairman who are looking such issues.Unless there is a change in the system of school betterment committee ion procedure the issue will be not sorted it out for good..Already Govt Kannada Medium schools are in descending mode and in such circumstances parents are forced to look for Eng medium private schools.

The ZP is now faced with a financial crunch. We have no dedicated fund for the repair works and as much as Rs 30 crore is needed if we have to repair all schools under ZP.
First Government has pay 20% for above money to authorities directly to their account as commission than only they will repair the school. These schools were built before independence, our political leaders only busy in looting our money and not maintaining these buildings. The day is not far one day our Vidana sauda will come down.

Nothing is in good shape be it road, public toilet and what worst they dont spare innocent children also. Is this the return of our hard earned. The concerned authorities should be treated with third degree treatment without any exception and i would say that they are nothing less than hidden terrorist who kill the innocent lives.
