Udupi, Aug 6: A portion of the school building belonging to Tonse-Khandige private aided higher primary school at Kemmannu Gujjarabettu near Malpe, crashed to the ground on Monday August 5 afternoon. Presence of mind shown by the teachers however, ensured that the incident did not turn into tragedy. This school has a history of 115 years.
The teachers of the school had noticed on Monday morning that the walls of a portion of the school building had developed cracks. Sensing trouble, they shifted the children who were to study in this portion of the building, to other rooms. The school management had employed people to temporarily repair the roof of the building. However, due to heavy rains which lashed the area on Monday afternoon, the wall as well as roof of the school collapsed to the ground. As the children had already been shifted out of the place, the accident fell short of turning into a catastrophe.
The walls of the school located to the west side of the school fell to the ground, and loss relating to the incident has been estimated at ten lac rupees. The school building is 65 years old, it is learnt.
Officials of the education department, local people's representatives, village accountants etc visited the spot and conducted inspection.
