Kundapur, Aug 4: The newborn that was rescued from Imbu area located in Mookambika sanctuary within Jansal in Chittoor gram panchayat limits in the taluk after it went through the ordeal of getting to battle with inclement weather conditions, insects, and hunger, is hale and hearty now.

The baby is safe in a hospital here, and surgeon of the hospital, Dr Dinesh Kumar, has informed that the baby had some worms in its ears as it remained in the forest for long, and that this condition stands treated after a surgery was conducted.

A minor girl living in Koodlu in Kanyana Guddeangady within Hattiangady gram panchayat in the taluk had given birth to this girl child. Immediately after the child was born inside the forest, it was abandoned there by its mother, who was also accompanied by her mother. The child was rescued by some journalists after coming to know about the incident, but by then the child had suffered in the open due to rain and hunger.

Tahsildar,Gayatri Nayak, and deputy superintendent of police, C B Patil, said they have given the name, 'Panchami', to the girl as she was born on the auspicious day of Nagara Panchami festival. Police circle inspector, P M Diwakar, along with Gayatri Nayak and C B Patil, have been making efforts to convince the mother of the child, who has so far remained stoic and non-committal, to change her decision and allow the child to stay and grow with her.

It may be recalled that the unmarried minor girl stated above had become pregnant, and the fellow villagers had taken note of this development. The fact that the girl along with her mother had visited deep forests after she started to get labour pain, and that she had come back within hours without being accompanied by a baby, had surprised them. After some local journalists were alerted about this development, they had visited the forest area with the help of the driver of the vehicle by which the duo had travelled, and found the baby crying in the forests, but by then around 30 hours had elapsed since the baby made its appearance on earth.

The mother of the baby is now suffering on account of acute bleeding. She stands admitted into the government hospital here. The child has since been kept with its mother, and the mother has been instructed to breastfeed the baby. Women constables have been posted at the hospital to keep an eye on the concerned.

In the meanwhile, the police, in an effort to arrest the person who was responsible for this pregnancy, have gone to Sagar in Shimoga district to search for him. The officials said that the baby's mother and grandmother have been given a day to decide on raising the baby in their care. The tahisldar as well as police officers said the duo has been given time due to humanitarian considerations, and that steps as per law would be initiated against them if they refuse to take the baby with them.

The officials also said that steps would be taken to match the DNA of the person accused of fathering the child with that of the baby once he is taken into custody, to establish the relationship.

This young mother almost committed murder fearing shame from society. Unwed mothers need support so they don't have to have babies in the forest . It's time that we Indians stop trying to please the society .

The child luks so cute and happy despite go through all the ordeals. We are loosing moral values and culture. It is high time this is preached in all churches, temples, masjids all religious places, schools and institution because if the foundation is strong then nothing can harm it and we will not get to hear crime news in the first place

It is advisable to handover this baby to an adoption centre. A childless couple wanting to adopt a child can take care of the little angel.
I don't think a mother who is not even 18 will be able to bring up this child and provide for the child.
Today even she accepts to keep this child with her because, the law enforcing authorities are asking her to do so, what would be the future of this child?
A mother's roe is to give birth and also to bring up the child by providing emotional and physical care.
The man who is responsible for this act is not even in the scene. How can one even think of handing over an innocent little angel to people like this?....

What a pity!!! the girl got pregnant and carried the baby for nine months and nobody took any action to find a solution to these development,a unfortunate situation anyway.Mother never throw her child in the forest unless this society allows the same.It is in the best interest and the future of the baby the mother the police should find the person who is responsible for this pregnancy and unite them towards a family to live in this society peacefully and unitedly towards a future.

Well done. Mother has right for custody of child. But creating safer environment is also equally important. @ naveen , if boy had any religious marriage ceremony before intimacy , its not rape , as age of consent for married girl is 15 ( check crpc 2013 , most of them unaware of this clause even police )

I AGREE WITH LYDIA LOBO, HANDING OVER BABY IN THIS SITUATION IS VERY DANGEROUS...FOR A EXAMPLE IF SHE KILLS THE BABY AND SUICIDE WHO WILL BE RESPONSIBLE? WHY WE HAVE TO TAKE CHANCE AFTER THIS INCIDENT AND POLICE CAN NOT KEEP EYE ON THEM ALL THE TIME...

BETTER TO GIVE SOME ONE WHO DON'T HAVE CHILD AND WANT TO ADOPT THIS BABY...THE FUTURE OF BABY WELL SECURED COMPARING CURRENT SITUATION....

    Naveen,

Why are you giving it a rape concept ? If it indeed was a rape, there would have been a complaint from them before nine months, not now after the baby is born !

Men lament about legal perspective towards 'intimacy with a woman below 18' as a rape, you are further boosting the term ?

It may well have been consensual and with the knowledge of the girl's mother !

It would be nice to keep the child in the care center until the mother attains 18 years and married to the culprit. Thereafter, they must be given the charge of the bay.

It will be very difficult for them to raise the baby under present situation, probably the mother may end her life after ending the child's life.
