Bangalore: Special units for rape victims at govt hospitals: Khadar

Bangalore, Aug 1 (DHNS): The State government will set up special treatment units for women who are victims of atrocities, at all 30 district hospitals in the State.

Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khadar said on Thursday that victims of atrocities can lodge complaint, get medical treatment, counselling and legal aid at these special units. He said attempts were on to ensure cooperation from Home, Health and Family Welfare, Law, Medical Education and Women and Child Welfare departments in setting up special units.

Earlier, it was planned to set up these units in the five government hospitals in Bangalore.

Khadar also said that his department would set up a three-member committee of gynaecologists to look into medical tests on rape victims.

“The present tests are very humiliating. We are looking at ways and means to ensure that there is a more advanced and better practice to conduct medical tests on a rape victim. The committee will submit the report in one or two months after which the recommendations will be implemented in all our hospitals,” he said.

Meanwhile, Women and Child Welfare Minister Umashree has written to Home Minister K J George and Bangalore Police Commissioner M N Reddi to invoke the Goonda Act against V R Bhat, who had threatened to rape a social activist on a social media.

Later, he had tendered an apology to her on Facebook.

Treating the victims by special units is good. Sir, initiate strict law and order / punishment so that the victim and the future victims never think of such crimes.

There is no question of rape victims if there is strict law for crime against women. Prevention is always better than cure right?. Instead of investing money of hospitals.. let them invest it on police forces to curb this evil. Talking aftermath is always negative dear madam.

Praveen..you are right. Government is not able to punish the rapists and criminals. There should be strict laws to punish the rapists. Sad to see so many rape cases in Karnataka. These are reported cases and God knows about unreported. Sad to see Home Minister sleeping. We need strong home minister to tackle law and order situation.

Great move. U.T. Khadar should be made home minister as current home minister is useless. Khadar can initiate strict action against rapists and criminals. God bless Khadar bhai. You are jewel of Mangalore shining in Karnataka. You are role model for all politicians.

I am glad that special units for rape victims have been opened. In this context I would strongly recommend that special units be opened by the Police Department to deal with the perpetrators of this kind of crime which are ever on the increase.
