Mangalore, Jul 31: Sheikh Mansoor (38), residing in Janata Colony at Kana Katla near Suratkal, who is facing charges of defrauding many including politicians and entrepreneurs from various parts of the country to the tune of several crores of rupees, was arrested by the Suratkal police on Wednesday July 30. On producing him in the court, Mansoor was remanded to judicial custody till August 8.
The court had issued arrest warrant against the accused relating to 11 cases of fraud registered in Suratkal police station. Reportedly, Mansoor had been taken into custody once earlier, but he had succeeded in giving the policemen a slip. It is gathered that during the police questioning then, he had confessed to several of his crimes.
Reportedly, the accused had bought jowar costing around Rs 17 lac from a JDS leader from Hassan district by getting himself introduced through a former station house officer here, and then failed to pay the purchase consideration. It is said that several dignitaries including a woman Congress leader from Dakshina Kannada district were among those who were cheated by the accused. He was adept at convincing people about his honest intentions through nice approaches, innocent looks, and fake documents. It is said that he used to get introduced to people with different names.
In the past, Mansoor is said to have told the policemen that the people of Dakshina Kannada district were easiest among the people of south India to cheat. He told the interrogators that the people on their own handed over cash, demand drafts, cheques etc to him, and that he had never taken money forcefully or stolen it.
Mansoor has standing cases in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, Gujarat, Kolkota and other states relating to defrauding well-known personalities.
