Goa deputy CM Francis D'Souza apologises for Hindu nation remark

Panaji, Jul 28 (IANS): Goa's Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza Monday apologized for his comment that India was already a Hindu nation.

"My opinion could be wrong for others. I accept it. I don't say it is the most correct opinion. You might say I am wrong. If anyone's sentiment is hurt, I apologise," D'Souza said.

"Hindu is my culture, Christianity is my religion. When I say Hindu, it means culture and not religion. Hindu culture is 5,000 years old and my religion is 2,000 years old," D'Souza said.

D'Souza said Friday: "India is a Hindu country. It is Hindustan. All Indians in Hindustan are Hindus, including me, I am a Christian Hindu."

His comments triggered an uproar in the national media and on the political scene. The opposition asked the Goa Roman Catholic Church to excommunicate him for committing heresy.

D'Souza is one of the senior-most minority members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa and has been the party's poster-boy as far as the Christian community is concerned.

Christians account for nearly 26 percent of the state's population.

What is said is already said but what is the use of apologizing now? One should think before expose anything to the public. Now what is the use of changing the words. These kind of irresponsible remarks should not be spoken public, it may create disharmony in society. So the political leaders please careful when make remarks like this . any way now that the leader appolised is a good sign and example for others. Care to be taken in future.

    Dear vasu India,
I quote yours: However, when a faith is forced on people then it becomes a religion and faith is nothing but a sword. Unquote.

Exactly Deputy chief Minister Francis D'Souza feeling the heat/realized to be with bjp he must change his faith or support Hindu way of life. He feels to be in bjp he must keep hindus faith in close relations.

Church doesn't care for unfaithful people.
We need holiness in the church to sustain.

Can you kindly explain what were you in your previous life in the Hindu way of life. How does life came into existence in this world through chimpanzees, monkeys through crows or through cows as per way of life and from your karma and dharma. If that is the case what is the necessity Brahma.

    Kindly explain.

Concerning to St. Paul: He was a wicked man persecuting the church. Similar to Graham stain's killer turned to the faith of Jesus. After Paul's conversion to the truthful faith of Jesus he utilized spiritual sword and not a material sword as you specify and see in the Christian faith.( I quote Ephesians 6: 17 And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: unquote) St. Paul walked righteously, truthfully and in a lawful ways. Only after his conversion from wicked ways to the faith of Jesus.
    Wait for Jesus coming again….

Finally Paul died as a Martyr/very painful death he experienced for the sake of the Faith of Jesus.

Prabhu, thank you. I do understand what faith is and I agree with you on the definition provided. However, when a faith is forced on people then it becomes a religion and faith is nothing but a sword. In the same fashion, if you have a specific faith that is unique to you where you get solace from it and don't preach it to anyone then it becomes your truth or dharma. So this dharma is the guiding light that is inclusive of you, your belief and the path you follow. No two dharma's can be the same, it could be alike. It is as unique as ones mind. Please note the word dharma here has not reference to anything 'Hindu'. It is just a word to define the absolute truth which anyone can perceive.

The same book that your god wrote. If you understand the timeline between the death of Jesus and the start of Christianity you will see the gap. For your understanding, Jesus did not start the Church or religion. His name that was well known way past his death was then utilized . Read the book of acts. In any case I am more interested in 300 BC about Chandra gupta maurya and his eventual end of life journey into Shravanabelagola that is of historic value to 'Hindu' the topic here as opposed to your agenda. Start reading indian History and culture instead of mis representing John or Paul.

Prabhu, with a christian frame of mind it is not possible to understand what Dharma or Truth is. Get a hold of yourself first. I see where you are going but don't want to goad you any further.
It is not about any battle here about one faith being better than the other. It is about forgetting your fundamental dharma or being a Hindu or Indian and seeing allegiance to a borrowed faith.

    Dear Vasu,
I don't agree that i have a Christian frame of mind as the facts unravelled and the truth which was exposed brought out Logic into the matter and on applying logic everything became crystal clear that most of these things are made up.
The books which apply are bound together and the books that don't are discarded.
Now the books discarded might hold more info and may be true than the books chosen.
The flaws, errors and the omissions & additions don't speak up much to support the text.
A deep probe into it will expose the truth.
Its true what you said i am sailing into disbelief as new truth pour in.

    Dear vasu, India,
You are seeing on a material ground. The faith in Jesus was not found on material ground but on spiritual ground the spiritual faithful people.

CHURCH MEANS IT IS NOT BIG, BIG BUILDINGS. CHURCH = WE THE FAITHFUL PEOPLE OF JESUS CHRIST. CHURCHES WERE BUILT ONLY TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE FROM SUN, RAIN AND FROM WINTER AND FROM EXTREME WIND. OTHERWISE BIG, BIG, BUILDINGS ARE NOT IMPERATIVE/NECESSARY/REQUIRED. A TENT FOR THE SUN OR A PRAYER HALL IS ALSO SUFFICIENT.

Jesus was a spiritual leader on this earth. He taught spiritual matters to enter into heaven. Jesus built the church on a strong foundation that is the faithful people of Jesus Christ.

Constantine was a king and he was also the part of the church(church=people.)

I quote Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Unquote.

Nonsense, there is no word called Hindu Christian or Hindu Muslim. Of course we follow and adopt Indian culture, but not Hindu culture... For example, wearing a Saari is not a Hindu culture it is Indian culture. There are so many different cultures in India also depend upon our ethnic or linguistic entity. Goans Christians are the only people in India who don’t follow Indian culture. They are proud to be called Portuguese.

Since Church is not a religion, people of all religions, caste, creed and without religions are welcome to the Church. Always people have come to the fold of the church remaining true to only right Indian culture. So in this background what the minister said is right, if he is not deceptive in his motive, and a open challenge to the fanatics who strive to restrict religious freedom of people in the name of protecting culture and Religion. But anyone can walk out from the Church without any consequences of being beaten. CHURCH NEEDS QUALITY NOT QUANTITY.After all Christians must be proud of being Indians as many are and they must preach Jesus more through their actions of love rather than only comments of anguish and hatred. Jesus said by your fruits the world will know me.

I said Jesus did not made a religion. Jesus founded a church. CHURCH = WE THE PEOPLE FAITHFUL IN JESUS CHRIST SON OF THE LIVING GOD.
I quote Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

We are called Maseehiah, Messiah=anointed one Christ, followers of Christ were all called as Christians. We worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who was prior to the beginning of this world and universe.
The was given to Jesus was Emmanuel which means GOD WITH US. Jesus was called in Aramaic and in Hebrew yehshuwa, in kannada Yesu, in Arabic Issa/Essa

We Christians call the name of God in different languages.

For God in Hindi, Parameshwar, Eeshwar,

We Christians call the name of God in different languages in different names such as:

    in Greek-Theos,
    In German- Gott,
    German Old - Diet,
    In English - God,
    Norweign - Gud,
    Dutch - Godt,
    French - Dieu,
    Latin - Deus, etc., etc.,

In Arabic Christians call the name of God Allah.

Muslims call the name of their worshiping deity Allah in all the languages.

As some one commentator earlier pointed out if you see any translated book of Quran you will find the name of Islamic deity only Allah.

But He found the Church: PEOPLE WHO WORSHIP GOD ACCORDING TO HIS WILL,LIVING LIFE ACCORDING TO HIS WORDS IN JESUS CHRIST.The Bible does not say that we must follow a religion.rather it says, that every one must follow Him.The VEDAS SAY THAT By the blood of Christ alone can human beings be saved for eternal life. Secondly, I wonder How can one love CHRIST and cannot love his brothers and sisters love of God is equal to neighbor's love.It is against the teachings of Christ.Thirdly,Christians who are name sake will not be saved unless repent and b changed and make efforts to live the life of Christ.

Before commenting anything, we must know this. Paul's letter to the COLOSSIAN, 1.15-20. Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the first born son. Superior to all created things. For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, lords, rulers and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him. Christ existed before all things and in union with him all things have their proper place. He is the head of his body, the church: he is the source of the body's life. He is the first born son, who was raised from death in order that he alone might have the first place in all things. for it was by Gods own decision that the son has in himself the full nature of God. Through the son then God decided to bring the whole universe back to himself. God made peace through his son's sacrificial death on the cross and so brought back to himself all things both on earth and in heaven.

I think this is somthing that is tacitly instilled in their minds. This mentality can never be changed. It has become a common rule to blame Hindu as a religion for something that some sangh or group does. That needs to stop. Using Hindu loosely should not be tolerated and I mean the geological context associated to it. Belief wise the Hindu is never worried.

    Again another slip by Francis!!!
Humans existed when Dinosaurs were walking on this earth millions of years ago,as humans like now, disproving the theory of Darwin's evolution from ape to man.
Human foot prints of that age along with dinosaur remains found preserved in fossils. Scientific test proved they are not fake creation.
Conclusion- "Human Religion" existed even before any religion came into existence.
Aliens or Angels(devathes) or Gandharvas imparted many knowledge to us(less developed than them) from that era seems the right theory.
Francis it is better to leave Religious Discourse to the learned leaders who practice what they preach.

Leave aside human beings, no mammals existed during the times of dinosaurs. This has been scientifically proved. At that time only egg-laying species existed on this earth.
Darwins theory is right or wrong but it has also been proved scientifically that "Ape" species first appeared about Forty Lakh years ago on this earth.

Science is not stagnant water which stinks, but evolves as new scientific proofs emerge proving man was existing in dinosaur era as well.
Science always believes something with evidence but changes its statements after new evidence disproving the earlier evidences emerges later.
It seems most of the scientists or people are ignorant about existence of fossils of human foot prints along with dinosaur remains dating back to the age quoted by you.

Dear Mr D'Souza, with all respect I consider you to be an intelligent person, but NOT SO INTELLIGENT as to distinguish between Hindustan as nation and Hindu as religion. Besides since when our nation is known more as India or Bharat, and no more Hindustan, unlike "Pakistan", "Kazakstan", "Uzbekistan", etc.... What more, the situation in past might have been different, but that does not mean that we don't progress, and along with progress many changes take place. Should we remain only in the past? Why don't you travel in bullock cart, but take modern vehicles? etc. etc....... Use brains.

"Hindus" was a term used for those civilizations to the south of Hindukush mountains. We have a culture that spans 5000 yrs. Why should anyone apologize for that ? We were/still are hindus but with different religions. Just the way an Egyptian,Saudi,Emirati etc are of different nationalities but call themselves arabs.

In my opinion Mr. Francis D'Souza is stating an historical fact. I personally don't see anything amiss in his statement.

The fact is India (Bharat, Hindustan) was predominantly a Hindu nation, having a number of gods and various beliefs before Christianity was first brought to the shores of South Eastern Coast of India (the present state of Kerala) by St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Christ during the first century.

It was much later, around mid 16th century that the European Explorers (Portuguese, British, French etc.) landed on the shores of India for trading, plundering the riches, spices etc. along with missionaries and converted a lot of Indians to various forms of Christianity e.g. Anglican, Methodists, etc.

Of course, prior to this event the other warriors, emperors including Alexander the Great invaded northern India including the moguls and Islam or Muslim religion was established.

But this all history now. Suffice to say that we are all human beings and by birth Indians of various religions and culture. Hence, we should all live together in harmony and peacefully. Live and Let Live!!

What is the use of apologizing now? One should think before he/she spit-out anything. Now what is the use of twisting / playing with the words. This applies to all political leaders irrespective of which party they belongs to. Simple irresponsible words trigger in violence and the ordinary innocent people have to pay the price.

Joseph, a couple of corrections. Christianity 'IS' a religion. You are right that Jesus did not create a religion. It was a few hundred years later some folks decided to use Jesus to create Christianity. This is why several leaders stated that they love Jesus but hate the Christians. I always wondered why, now it is clear how a national pride ( of being a Hindu/Hindustani/Indian ) is dismissed in support of a faith. No different than Sharia.
Also, I would be interested in understanding the faith of Jesus.

Faith is confidence or trust in a person, thing, deity, view, or in the doctrines or teachings of a religion. It can also be defined as belief that "" is not based on proof,""[1] as well as confidence based on some degree of warrant.[2][3] The word faith is often used as a synonym for hope,[4] trust,[5] or belief.
