Border dispute: Tension in Belgaum, Shiv Sena blames Karnataka govt

Belgaum, Jul 28 (DHNS): Tension prevailed at Yellur village on Sunday after members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) resorted to stone-throwing and attacked police and mediapersons.

They were opposing the removal of a controversial signboard, depicting the village as part of Maharashtra, by the district administration for the second time in the village on Sunday. Police resorted to caning and dispersed the mob, bringing the situation under control.

As many as 18 people, including 14 police personnel, were injured in the incident. As a precautionary measure, the district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC on Belgaum, Nippani and Khanapur taluks.

In a pre-dawn operation, Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram and Superintendent of Police Chandrakant went to Yellur and removed the signboard, which was re-erected by MES activists on Saturday, within 24 hours after the administration removed the board in view of the high court directive.

Similar boards which had surfaced at Desur, Rajahansgad and Sulaga were also removed. However, several such boards installed in different parts of the district and Belgaum City several years ago continue to exist.

It appears that the district administration was concerned only with the Yellur board in view of the high court directive, which also sought a report on the action taken in this regard by July 28.

Immediately after the removal of the board, the police took two youths into custody for trying to disturb peace by raising slogans. They were later released after villagers protested against the detention.

The villagers then celebrated the youths’ release, with one even brandishing a sword. The crowd started attacking the police and mediapersons with sticks and stones.

The police then caned and dispersed the mob. SP Chandragupta told Deccan Herald the administration wouldn’t allow the board to be re-erected. Nearly 1,000 police personnel have been deployed in the village.

Shiv Sena re-ignites Belgaum border dispute ahead of Assembly polls

Mumbai, Jul 28 (CNN-IBN): With just three months remaining for the crucial Maharashtra Assembly elections, Shiv Sena has re-ignited the debate over the Belgaum border dispute.

In its mouthpiece Saamna, Sena has accused the Karnataka Police of removing a 'Maharashtra Rajya' plaque from one of the villages in Yellur. The editorial read, "Karnataka government's anti-Maharashtra age old stand continues. In 24 hours, not just once but twice the Kannadas have tried to target Maharashtrians symbols. They have indulged in violence."

Sena further accused the police of beating up women and pelting stones on villagers when they re-installed the controversial noticeboard. "Women were beaten up. Houses were destroyed. But no "Mai-ka-laal" raised their voice against this. Karnataka government is against Marathis and Maharashtrians. The plaque was Belgaum's Marathi pride," it further read.

Belgaum is a disputed region on the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Both the state claims stake to the region. According to reports, clashes broke out in Yellur region of Belgaum on Sunday when A crowd assembled at the place from where the signboard was removed and started pelting stones at police. As the crowd turned violent and continued pelting stones, police resorted to lathicharge, said Belgaum Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram.

He added that the re-erected 'Maharashtra Rajya' plaque was removed by the district administration.
Prohibitory order under section 144 of the IPC has been promulgated in Belgaum, Khanapur Taluka and Nippani town till July 29, he said.

While the Shiv Sena urged Centre to step in, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has assured to speak to his Karnataka counterpart.

There are so many battles raging in India for all the wrong reasons! We want progress but are unwilling to separate from the mindset of Religion, Caste, Color and Origin. Think of the World first.
What the hell are you going to achieve by renaming cities/states, creating/movies cities/states?
The worst decision ever made was to divide the states based on language. And we are simply continuing this charade.
Please people, make use of your brain for positive thinking, and not this nonsense.
Oppression in any form creates Rebellion, which in turn leads to Chaos.

Till 1860 Belgaum was predominantly Kannada speaking area.
In 1861 British set up a new Military Cantonment there in the name of Maratha Light Infantry. In this MLI the British recruited most of the soldiers from Maharashtra and also brought labours from Maharashtra to work as orderlies in the Camps. This way the Marathi speaking people increased in Belgaum and they out-numbered Kannadigas and it became the root of present crisis.

Some may not agree with me, but with regret I have to mention this. We Indians are not at all good as Trouble shooters but are famous for trouble making. Very good in blame game.

Beglaum riot would not are creeped up, provided the administration just ignored the sign board. These sign board would have been taken out eventually. In fact, the administration act is due to lack of maturity, which has ignited this issue.

This sign Board is there since last 27 years and many times district authorities officially instructed Yellur Gram panchayat to remove it but they did not comply with it. Now it was the order of High Court and Dist administration had no alternative but to remove the board. Still you say that Police should have shown maturity ! Probably you do not know how barbarian these Belgaum Marathi people are. I was in Belgaum for many years and I know their hostile and goonda mentality. Have you ever seen our Kannadigas behaving in Kasargod in this manner and beating up Kerala Police or installing the Board of Karnataka in Kasargod ??

Belagavi (Belgaum) is integral part of Karnataka, these uneducated fanatic, worthless goondas from MES backed by Shiv Sena from Maharastra are creating unnecessary problems for their political gain.
We fully support Govt of Karnataka for their initiative by sending strong police force to keep the situation under control, bash the scoundrels, file cases against the people who create problems.
If trouble maker-Marathi speaking people are not happy living in Karnataka they can cross the border and live in Maharastra, the Shiv Sena can look after them.

Karnataka high court has clearly given the verdict to remove the sign border which has been illegally placed. Any one disobeys and creates problem by placing new sign board (Yellur part of Maharastra Rajya) should be dealt with severe punishment as contempt of court order.

Lexy Saldhana, Sydney - Thank God ! you did not tell that Karwar should have been given to Goa.
Do you know in Solapur district of Maharashtra 60% of the people speak Kannada. In Jattha Taluk in Sangli dist also majority are Kannadigas. In Adoni in Andhra, Hosur & Dharmapuri in Tamilnadu are also having Kannada majority. Then how come Kannadigas are harmoniously blendning with the people of the respective states where they are living now ? Have they ever Put up the Board of Karnataka in their respective areas and provoked district administration and Honourable Court ?
Have we Tulunadu people ever put up a Board in Kasargod as Karnataka state ?
