Puttur, Jul 27: At a time when the state government has already taken a decision to upgrade the town municipal council here into city municipal council and official orders relating to this are about to be received, controversy has arisen over the issue of appointment of the chief officer.
Even before the office of the chief officer has become vacant, the urban development department has promoted the community officer of Shahari Rozgar Yojana as the chief officer of the municipality.
A number of corporators, it is learnt, met urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and submitted to him a petition urging for continuance of the present incumbent M H Sudhakar in that post. They are against the appointment of Shahari Rozgar Yojana official Rekha J Shetty as chief officer.
Sudhakar has been serving as the chief officer here since the last two years. It is said that Rekha Shetty's elevation to the post has the blessings of local MLA Shakuntala Shetty.
Some of the corporators contended that even if Rekha Shetty takes over as the chief officer, she will be in that post only for a few days as an officer whose rank is equivalent to that of tahsildar will replace her once the upgradation of the municipality happens.
