Bangalore rape: Angry students clash with police

Bangalore, Jul 21 (IANS): Several students were injured Monday in a clash with police at a private school here while staging a demonstration against the school management over the alleged rape of a six-year-old student July 2.

"We resorted to caning the activists to bring the situation under control, as some of them were attempting to pull the barricades down and barge into the school premises," a police official told IANS at the spot.

Though police arrested skating instructor Mustafa late Sunday on the charge of sexually assaulting the six-year-old in a class room July 2, the activists of a students' organisation here were not satisfied with the action and wanted the Vibgyor High School management to admit its failure in protecting the child and apologise for not acting in time against the culprits.

"We wanted to ask why the school management did not act against the accused and inform police about the crime. When police did not allow even our leaders to enter the school and meet its chairman Rustom Karewalla and principal, some of our activists tried to enter the school from other gate," Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) representative Hemant Kumar said.

ABVP is a students organisation of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

With atmosphere tense at the school, which remains shut since July 14 when hundreds of parents protested against the management, security has been beefed up and additional policemen have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident and maintain law and order.

When about 500 ABVP activists resorted to demonstration, shouting slogans and condemning police baton-charging, a junior school official came under escort and assured the protestors that the management would take all measures to ensure safety and security of 1,200-odd students studying in the school, which follows ICSE syllabus.

The activists also submitted a letter to the school, listing a dozen of measures they demanded to be enforced within a week and prevent repetition of such crimes in its premises.

Police also issued a set of guidelines to the school for the safety and security of its students and teachers.

"We have told them to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in all the classrooms, rest rooms, sports facilities and at the playground, employ more women security guards, deploy a teacher in all vehicles ferrying students, and background profiling of new staff," Deputy Commissioner of Police (south east) P.D. Pawar told IANS.

Protests were also held at Freedom Park by BJP's youth wing and near Town Hall by its women wing, with their activists raising slogans against the Congress Government over its "failure" to curb rising sexual offences against women and children.

Meanwhile, opposition BJP lawmakers continued to protest in the state legislative assembly over the failure of the ruling Congress government in checking crimes against women and minors in the city and other places in the state.

Mangalore: BJP demands proactive measures against atrocities on women

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Jul 21: "There is no protection for women in the state and rapes cases are increasing by the day. According to the media, in 2013, 270 rape cases have been reported in the state. People chose the Congress to give good administration, but they are providing very bad administration. Rapes are recurring due to the lethargy of the police department. This is due to the inefficient administration of the state government. Under Congress rule, there is no protection for ‘Bhu Mathe’, ‘Gou Mathe’, and ‘Mathe’," said MLC Monappa Bhandary.

He was addressing a protest at the DC office, held against the repeated sexual attacks on women on Monday July 21.

Bhandary said, “The state government has completely failed to prevent rapes in the state. If you cannot provide good administration, quit the chair. The home minister should also resign. When there is a serious debate in the assembly, the home minister gives answers like a joker in the assembly. The state government has completely failed to prevent rapes.”

Sulochana G K Bhat, BJP state vice-president, said, “Women cannot walk on the street without fear; there is no protection for women. Sexual assault is being repeated. When there was a serious debate in the assembly, the chief minister was dozing. If you cannot provide good administration, resign. The government should immediately change the home minister for his inefficient administration. State government ministers, taking the police department into confidence, should work for the protection of women. But the state government has failed to do this. Legally, the state government should subject the culprits to stringent punishment.”

On this occasion, Rukmayya Poojary, Jayaram Bhat, Ravishankar Mijar, and Annayya Kulal were present.

very good job by the people. this kind of protest will discourage the rapists and police will take action against rapists more strictly. i appreciate Mrs Menaka gandhi s efforts to amend the juvenile law, so that juvenile rapists will not get away without punishment

If BJP was in power in the state, whether these people would have protested is a big question mark? This appears to be a politically motivated rally with vested interests and not with genuine concern for the victims.

Jobless goons and political jokers. Police already arrested the culprits and state govt had disqualified the school also. Why these people fighting with police? When Soujanya was raped and murdered under BJP ruling, where these people were? For political gaining and vote bank BJP can do anything.

Of course students are deeply hurt.
    Protesting is very important!
But Politicians are using these students to clash with Police?

What Police can do when Political leaders themselves are harboring rapists! viz.
    1. Gang Rape accused Nihalchand
Meghwal of BJP is still Union
    Minister even after massive
    protest! Any shame?
    2. Halappa raped his colleague's
    wife was previous Karnataka BJP
    Govt. Minister!
    3. Madhya pradesh is Rape capital
    of India!
    4. U.P. is ranking 3 for rapes.
    5. Situation in Delhi is also
    worsening like in Karnataka.

Who is to be blamed? Ever since riots broke out, rowdies became fearless, rapes multiplied.
    God save India.

Good comment Valerian, I strongly feel retired Bombay Police commissioner Julio Ribeiro should be given charge to eliminate crimes and should be given free hand. Just catch them and shoot them. No court kachery will come in between. Within the next 2 years you can read only good news in Daiji world. You may find lot of lawyer’s without jobs also. That is for sure.
