Beltangady, Jul 19: The Beltangady police on Saturday July 19 arrested three more accused in connection to the moral policing incident that occured at Ujire on July 16.
The accused are identified as Praveenkumar (25), a resident of Kalmanja town, Narayana (36), a resident of Ujire and Kiran (27), a resident of Kalmanja.
With this, the number of arrests in the case has risen to seven.
On Thursday July 17, the police had arrested Gopal (32), a resident of TB Cross in Laila here, Ajith Kumar (23), a resident of Mani in Bantwal, Suresh Salian (22) from Valpady in Moodbidri, and Lingappa Naik (37), a resident of Machar Ujire.
The police produced them before the judge seeking permission to shift them to Bellary jail. The judge grant the permission, and accordingly, all the seven accused were taken to Bellary jail the same evening.
The incident occured when the 19-year-old girl, who had come for her sister's admission at a college, was waiting for the bus at Ujire along with a 23-year-old youth. The mob, assuming them to be lovers belong to different communities, surrounded them and began questioning about their identities and allegedly harassed them. The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Based on a complaint lodged by the youth, the police booked the accused under various sections of the IPC.
