Mangalore: Taxi driver steals gold from owner's house, arrested

Mangalore, Jul 18: The policemen investigating the theft of gold ornaments worth Rs 2.22 lac from the house of Madhu Acharya, resident of Karnad Gerukatte in Mulky, which was detected recently, succeeded in solving the case and arresting the thief. 

Vishwas from Derebail Konchady in the city, who used to work as a taxi driver for Acharya was arrested and 74 grams of jewellery was recovered from him. 

Madhu Acharya owns and operates a number of taxies.

The theft had occurred during early December 2013. Acharya had to visit the house of a relative. Before leaving home he had placed gold ornaments belonging to his daughter in a box and kept the key of the box in the showcase in which he used to keep the keys of the taxis. Since then, he had never verified or removed the ornaments from the said box.

On Tuesday July 15 Madhu's wife Smita Acharya and daughter Ambika opened the box to wear the ornaments for their visit that day to a temple in Padubidri. They found to their dismay that the ornaments had gone missing from there. 

Acharya while filing complaint in Mulky police station had expressed suspicion about the involvement of Vishwas in the said theft.

The policemen took Vishwas into custody from near a petrol bunk at Padupanamboor on Wednesday June 16 and questioned him about the theft. It is said that Vishwas confessed to his involvement in the theft.

He also showed various places where he had pawned the ornaments. The policemen could trace and recover all the ornaments which were stolen by him. 

The accused was produced in the court on the evening of Thursday July 17, upon which he was remanded to 15 days judicial custody. 

Mulky station inspector Ramachandra Nayak, sub-inspector Parameshwar and other staff were involved with the investigation.
