Kundapur: Sea erosion damages concrete road, drains away crores of rupees

Kundapur, Jul 15: Sea erosion has acquired very serious proportions at Maravanthe near here. Waves lashing at the concrete road built near the ongoing outer harbour work have caused extensive damages. The sheds located on the beach, where fishing equipment are stored, have also faced serious danger.

Huge waves are also hitting the other side of the coastal road. Mud wall erected by a local named Krishna Naik to protect his coconut plantation has been washed away. In addition to a number of coconut trees, boulders stacked on the edge of the sea have also been dragged into the depths of the sea by the waves.

The boulders which stood as protective wall for the outer harbour work going on here have also vanished into the sea.

The locals opine that crores of rupees invested by the government here is going down the drain because of the unscientific way in which this plan is prepared. The local people, who are witnessing the surging sea damaging the concrete road, are living with a sense of apprehension about what is in store ahead.

Why Karnataka Govt or Dist Authorities are not planting Mangroves which are the cheapest and most effective way to reduce sea erosion.

Tetrpods are a short term solution to a local extension of a few miles. It is not a solution against all sea erosion. If you block water in one place using tetrapods it will take land in another place where you do not have tetrapods. You cannot put Tetrapods along thousands of miles of coast. A few miles like in Marine drive is OK.

Even with tetrapods, you need to have a foundation put up with concrete which is deep as else the sea will erode the soil under the tetrpods and they will slide into the sea. You can see that in some of the pictures, where the road has cracked up despite rocks put in place.

Building a concrete foundation for thousands of miles is not feasible. You will just push soil erosion from one locality to another where there is no barrier.

Long term solution is to leave sufficient margin from the sea and live. The sea will find its level and in the meantime our unscientific expers will pocket their crores.

This is a very good scientific explanation mentioned.... Adding on , forty years ago a very pains-taking,yet accurate effort was implemented at Thannir-Bhavi i.e, to plant a strech of 'CAJURINA TREE BELT' by the then Dedicated officers of the Forest Department. Today , if we enjoy the CAJURINA TREE BELT around Thannir-bhavi, it was not only meant for shade, rather 40 years ago planned to check speed of sea breeze AND ACTUALLY TO CHECK SEA EROSION....
Coastal people & people whoever who read this, please realize this and kindly join in your Hands too...

Year after year Karnataka Govt spends crores of rupees for stopping sea-erosion, and Year after year sea-erosion continues, as all the money sanctioned by govt goes in the pockets of private contractors and politicians.
Now these Karnataka politicians are going on tour to Holland and other European countries to study how they stopped sea erosion in their countries. But these Karnataka politicians will go on sight seeing and never bother to see how sea erosion was stopped there. But after coming back they will submit a report by stealing information from Wiki or other websites related to sea erosion.

I feel pity on ourselves... you know why... we are recommending so many things here. but fact and practical is that now a days also crores of rupees are getting sanctioned for these stone filling stuffs. I just read satursday or sunday as some crores sanctioned. after few months or an year it will be published as all those stones are consumed by sea.... it's on and on and on... this is reality.

Crores are sanctioned, crores are swallowed (not by the sea!) and people living on those shores and others hear the same song - we are spending such a lot - now monsoon time - we will look into it after the monsoon is over!!!!
Like Ms. N.M., Mangalore pointed out where such methods have succeeded, the Govts. do not want to have a permanent solution in these coast lines as it will be a huge loss for their ever growing pockets.
I agree with N.M. and say the same thing - why we have to back or elect these scoundrels having no knowledge of almost anything at all except looting - only thing they have wide knowledge of how to do it in various ways.
I hope that Poojary and the likes, will fleece all these corrupt politicians, Govt. officials etc. and bring them down to earth, relieving them of their ill-gotten wealth.

Once again i will say that the solution is installation of large sized concrete interlocking Tetrapods similar to the ones in Marine Drive, Mumbai, Japan coastline and Maldives.

The initial cost might be high, but it will provide a long lasting solution and stop further damage or loss of property.

I must add that we people will continue to suffer as long as we elect incompetent and unworthy politicians to represent us. These hopeless politicians HAVE NO CLUE about this problem.

    Dear N.M. Mangalore,
Again I want to tell all DW readers that Marine Drive & Gateway of India were built by Britishers, to whom some of our commentators blindly blaming them. Our corrupt politicians & contractors will never undertake to build such projects for us. They only wants to loot & ruin our country. Many of my Abu Dhabi friends know that once Cornish from Sheraton to Hilton Hotel was full of sands. But today it is a beautiful place to walk,Cycling & to sit & relax,
    as the Government there developed
the the area, to the full satisfaction of the residents. Our politicians main aim is to become multi crorepathis. They r not at all bothered of its citizens.

    Dear Bryan, Bahrain

Our Ministers r increasing tax on poor people year after year to enjoy their luxurious life in Resorts & 5 star hotels & to travel on 4WD. Before elections they have dreams to full fill their dynastic fathers who have left the work un finished. After the elections some wants to convert our Udipi city as a smart city. Really smart move to pocket some more crores. Some one said before the election for the sake of Country's future he wants to contest 7th time at the age of 84 years.

I see it as a pure political game. crores of rupees gets sanctioned to these stone deplying work, nobody knows how much spent and now road is swallowed by sea. So, nobody can question back and track back. Who ensured the amount will be a utilization and a long term solution ? who asked for the stone filling and what's the budget and who tracks the expense and how strong the wall was and now why it was so simply swallowed by sea ... who investigates. this may be the simple way to loot the money where no tracking can be done post rainy seasonw hich will ensure the road is broken and went in to the sae. wow...
