Mangalore, Jul 10: Water gushed into classrooms at Mahesh PU College, Kottara Chowki here on Thursday July 10 after a large overhead tank burst.

Campus incharge Deepak said that the college had installed the water tank, with a capacity of 25,000 litres, just about a year ago.

"The Sintex tank was supposed to last for 20 years, but within a year it has burst. The fault is of Sintex, not ours," he said.

It is said that, the students who came to attend classes at 9 did not know what happened, and some of them posted updates on Facebook stating the College's compound wall had collapsed. However, it was later found to be a rumour.

The water that gushed out of the tank flooded into classrooms and made it impossible for students to even enter. The cleaning staff got busy flushing the water out.

It is learnt that due to water seeping into nooks and corners of the building, electricity lines have been damaged and so also ACs and other equipment.

The College declared a three-day holiday, until the entire building is cleaned and the situation turns to normal.

All these new schools which have mushroomed in Mlore in the last 10yrs should know what they procure and what they deliver. These educational places should not be business centers. When you ask any person who as joined these new schools/colleges they say that the education is good, with good teachers so parents not at the safety of your wards.

There is no point in blaming the syntex tank manufacturer or someone it is the prime and foremost responsibility of the management which failed miserably to assess the materials they used for construction. As the college logo says that "Education at its best" same way the students safety and facilities they provide should be at its best.

Thank God a big tragedy was averted!! Looks like it was a "spurious" tank made from recycled plastic!!

This incident is an eyeopener about the dangers of installing high capacity water tanks available under various brand names in the markets!!

It is a pure substandard quality tank. Such a large capacity of 25000ltrs should have reinforced material with double layer of sheets. The thrust being very high, it is a must to have above said quality.
The one used are meant to be buried in the soil, which acts as a support. Somebody has surely misguided!!!

    Bro, you are right!!

Also when going for such high capacity storage, it is always advisable to have conventional concrete tanks as these fiber tanks have the danger of spontaneously disintegrating with disastrous consequences!!
