HC notice to Goa over wedding of Salve's daughter

Panaji, July 7 (IANS): A division bench of the Bombay High Court in Goa Monday issued notice to the Goa government over former solicitor general of India Harish Salve's daughter's marriage in Goa this February.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by a local activist-lawyer challenging the marriage under the Special Marriage Act.

Petitioner Aires Rodrigues argued that the marriage of Saaniya Salve to Armaan Siddiqui held in the beach village of Candolim should be null and void because the Special Marriage Act is not applicable to Goa, where a Uniform Civil Code is in force.

Rodrigues also alleged that the Special Marriage Act was hurriedly made applicable in Goa via an Extraordinary Gazette notification, a month before the marriage.

In its notice, the division bench comprising of Justice Ranjit More and Justice U.V. Bakre asked the Goa government to respond to the petitioner's contention by July 21.
