Kundapur, Jul 2: "Media as a sector has been growing at a breakneck speed by leaps and bounds beyond all expectations with the advent of modern gadgets and techniques. Keeping abreast with the latest developments in this sector has turned out to be a challenging proposition. In the face of these developments, the journalists can still be successful, if they stay truly committed to professional ethics and maintain individuality," felt founder president of Kundapur Taluk Working Journalists Union and veteran advocate, A S N Hebbar.
He was delivering the keynote address at the Journalism Day celebrations held under the aegis of the taluk unit of working journalists union on Tuesday July 1 evening at Rotary Laxminarasimha Kala Mandir in the premises of Government Junior College here.
"In the 70's, the field of journalism had not been influenced by modernity. Still the journalists then were fiercely committed to their profession and they were in this field because of the interest and respect they had for this profession rather than the income they made out of it," he said.
"The media had the power and ammunition to even force ammendments of laws and constitution. However, it is tragic to note that all these are changing now and commitment has become a casualty. Those who are determined to become successful as journalists should develop an insatiable interest in literature, sports, education, politics and all the happenings in society. Young journalists should make up their minds to win back the dignity and respect of this profession by enriching their knowledge through studies and experiences," he advised.
President of Kundapur Taluk Working Journalists Union, Shashidhar Hemmady presided over the meeting. Deputy superintendent of police, C B Patil and former president of Udupi District Working Journalists Union Alaevoor Dinesh Kini participated as chief guests. State president of the district unit of journalists union Rajesh K C delivered the introductory address.
Nagaraj Rayappanamath, general secretary of the union, Nagaraj Vandse of the programme organizing committee and Lokesh Acharya were present. Veteran newspaper distributors, Shankaracharya Gangolli and Vittal Pai were felicitated at the venue.
Journalist, Raghavendra Pai Gangolli welcomed the gathering while Arun Shirur presented the programme. Chandrashekhar Beejadi spoke about the persons chosen for felicitation at the programme. Ganapati Vaidya proposed the vote of thanks.
