Kozhikode, Jun 30: Smugglers of gold are getting innovative by the day. A passenger at Karipur (Calicut) airport was caught on Sunday June 29 trying to smuggle in gold worth Rs 20.5 lac concealed in jars of honey.
The customs officials at the airport intercepted a passenger identified as Abdul Samad Mohammed Ali (21), a resident of Ichlangode, who arrived from Sharjah at the airport on Sunday.
The customs officials grew suspicious on noticing Abdul's gait and questioned him, besides checking his luggage. The officials found jars of honey in the bag, and on further examination, found powdered gold mixed with the honey.
They also found 68 pellets of gold weighing 698 grams in the jars.
The jars were concealed under some clothes in his bag.
In the past, customs officials at the Calicut airport had seized gold smuggled in various ways, hidden in electronics or even coated with grease. This is the first time they came across gold concealed in honey jars, sources said.
