Police have arrested BJP worker Rajesh (34), also a resident of Panathur, in this regard.
On Thursday June 26, BJP activists had held a protest march against the murder of BJP activist and auto driver Arun Lal, who had been stabbed to death allegedly by his friend Jose. During the protest, BJP activists led by Rajesh had reportedly waylaid Sharif who was riding his bike and questioned him. It had led to a tussle and subsequently given rise to enmity.
Sources said that on Sunday night, arguments erupted between Sharif and Rajesh at Panathur market and in the fight that ensued, Rajesh allegedly stabbed Sharif with a knife and fled.
Though the locals rushed Sharif to hospital, he died on the way.
Rajesh, who was also injured in the fight on Sunday, was admitted to Kasargod general hospital after his arrest.
Sharif was a lorry driver. CPM Panatthadi panchayat has called for a day-long protest on June 30 to condemn the murder.
A case has been registered against Rajesh and further investigations are on.
