The amount of money you can take while travelling outside India depends on your status - Resident / Non-resident and also the purpose. The amount for every situation is provided in the link below which is from RBI web-site and so authentic.
    http://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/FAQView.aspx?Id=53

While travelling to India from abroad, you can carry up to $5000 and $10000 in the form of other instruments like traveller cheques and drafts etc. (equivalent in other currencies) without declaring on your customs form. Anything in excess of these amounts need to be d in your customs form.

the information given by Superintendent of customs Marcus Pereira is wrong, as there is a limit to carry foreign currencies when traveling abroad. as per RBI guidelines an Indian can carry only 3000 usd or its equivalent any foreign currency.
