Mangalore, Jun 21: Robert Aranha (65), who suffered extensive injuries in a road accident which occurred near the road diversion on the national highway near Karnad towards Chitrap in Mulky on Friday June 20 morning, passed away at a hospital later in the day. The scooter being driven by Robert, a resident of Ave Maria House in Mulky, was hit by a Maruti Omni van which was moving on national highway towards Udupi from Mangalore.
Robert was returning home after dropping off his two grandchildren at the Balavadi centre located at Karnad Markanja here, when he became the victim of this accident. After the van hit his scooter, Robert was tossed away to some distance, and was grievously injured. The van driver sped away not even caring to attend to the injured scooterist. The driver of another car who reached the spot sometime later, shifted Robert to a hospital, but it was too late, and he could not be saved, even though immediate treatment was provided.
The deceased is survived by wife and two daughters. He had settled down in Mulky after retiring as an executive of a well-known mining company in Goa. He was known to be brilliant since his student days, and had acted in a lead role in a Konkani movie which hit the screens about two decades back. The policemen upon collecting information have learnt that the vehicle which was involved in this hit and run case belongs to a person from Kinnigoli.
